Hi All,
Just a quick one can someone tell me which map datum I should be using on my Map 330. Currently I’m using WGS84, but have noticed Aus Geod '66 is also used??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Matt,
Going by the book GPS Vehicle Navigation in Australia (which I am currently reading trying to learn how to work my etrex and laptop for moving map displays etc)
All Australian maps from 1999 onwards should use GDA94 which is the equivelent to WGS84. (the difference being only a few cm).
The book goes on to explain the difference between AGD66 and WGS84 and even shows the difference in metres.
So I guess it all depends on the age of the maps you are using.
The book mentioned is well worth the money if you are new to GPS.

Cheers

You need to use the same datum as the map you are reading. New maps may be using GDA94 but I am betting that not all your maps are new. Even 'new' maps may not have been revised since the 1970's so they will still be in AGD66 or perhaps something different.

I am currently scanning maps for OziExplorer and find it a pain that Hema and some others don't even put the Map Datum or Map Projection on their map at all. Government maps seem to be pretty good for giving you that info though.

Good question Matt. Always used WGS84 which seems to work fine, but if GDA94 is the new system and only a few meters out, does that mean it's backwardly compatible?

In other words, should I swap my GPS to GDA94 and get up to date, or stick with the old WGS84 which I know works?

Cheers

V8Diesel - GDA94 is only centimetres different from WGS84 and therefore can be considered the same for handheld GPS users. There is therefore nothing to gain (in this regard) by upgrading to a unit with GDA94 available as a display datum. Brand new Magellans dont even have GDA94 as an option...but as mentioned, it doesnt matter...though I suspect it confuses a few people.

Cheers
Greg

Updating your Extex is quite simple. My Etrex is updated and has a GDA option in the datum list. I presume this is GDA94. It make no difference from WGS84 so it must be.

Davoe,

Not sure if the place you bought yours from does the same however Johnny Appleseed will update it for free if you bought it from them. Could be worth a try.

Hey Everyone,
Just Downloaded and Uploaded the Latest "Software" Update to my Map 330 and WOW what a difference in the Layout of the Screens its Great they have added things like Average Speed and Max Speed, changed the look of the compass too many things to mention and I haven’t had a look through them all yet so without sounding like an Ozzie Icon "Do your self a Favor" and download the update if you have a map 330 well worth it.
