I have a 1995 GQ Patrol 2.8 Turbo diesel which has now done 165,000 km. My mechanic advises that I must get the valve clearances checked, the Nissan dealer says that it is not a service item on this model. Comments please? (Other than buy a new car)

Jeff
the 2.8 GQ uses hydraulic valve lifters so no adjustment is necessary.
If the you have valve noise it is caused by dirty oil blocking the passage
Regular oil changes are a must for this engine

Many thanks Nismo. We are heading off to the Centre shortly. One less thing to worry about.
