I test drove an 80 Series turbo diesel in a car yard the other day, is the first one i have driven so i have a question about power range......
This thing had absolutely no power below 2000 rpm, it wouldnt even pull 2nd gear out of a corner. Once it got to 2000rpm, it was like flicking on a switch and the turbo spooled up and it pulled pretty hard.
Can someone please tell me that this in NOT normal.....it was so bad I was glad to get back into my P.O.S. I was thinking maybe injectors need service or something?
I'm not buying it anyway as they want too much $$ and its only 92 model with 330K kms on the clock, and needs too many things fixed on it. lowest they would go was $24k and they had $27k on the window.
Otherwise, these cars drive really well, im pretty sure ill buy one, just not this one.
Thanks

did it have a 1hd-t or a 1hd-ft donk?I was checking the prices of these things out in the sun paper they are way overpriced even privately especially considering the factory turbo motors in them were not rated by T to the extent they were discontinued in the 100s

Davoe,

If a '92 model, should have the 1HD-T, the 1HD-FT started about '95.

We had a '90 model with 1HD-T, and 31x10.5R15 tyres. After getting the pump done up, pulled like a train, really used to growl. Traded it on a '97 model 1HD-FT, that is a big, lazy bugger, hasn't got the grunt of the '90 model.

Hooroo...

so your saying the 95 you had with 24 valve head didnt have the same gruntas the 12 valve 1990 model - interesting! I have only driven normally aspirated 1hz powere vehicles although when working as a drillers offsider the driller would take us the 80k to the site in a supercharged hzj ute 150 -160kph out there where as a standard ute will do about 130 - 140 kph

My mate had one of these and after about 250,000 km a piston burned out. He had no end of trouble with it (not the engine til then) and not wanting to invest another $7000 to fix it just cut his losses and sold it.

Nuts,

You'll pay top dollar for one of these unfortunately. People knock 'em, but a lot want one too.

I was bitching about how gutless ours is, below 2,000rpm, and one member kindly let me know of a few mods that can be done to pump, to rectify this problem. From memory, only cost about $200. Improves them no end. Have yet to get to a diesel place to get it done.

Thanks for the replies,

I think ill just test drive a few more before buying one. I have read here that you can fit an intercooler to both the models and will get good improvements......they arent cheap though, the cars or the intercoolers.........
Your right about being overpriced, but talk about hard to find too......i tried looking for a 95 to 97 model and they are impossable to find for less than $25k.

Still, i do love them so will probably fork out for one, and just hope its reliable for me.

Nuts,
they need the pump 'tweaked' on the dyno. Not a big expense and even they charged 3 times as much it is worth it (I only wish I had done mine sooner).
Keep looking for a later model (post 95) with the 1HDFT 24valve engine. There are still some good low km models out there.
cheers
