Yes it is possible. Very easy, but not cheap. The motor bolts straight up.
You need new wiring, bell housings, brackets, radiator, etc etc.. it isnt as easy as it sounds. Almost easier to buy a cheap diesel, and park them side by side and do it that way.
There are a few writeups on how to and some really good posts on the patrol4wd
forum on this, its probably in teh patrol archive site too. Also a fair few posts on outerlimits4x4.com on it with a few having done this recently.
Cost wise it would be better to go with a Brunswick diesel V8 Conversion.
Mick (from Christie Engineering) who posts here has done it with his brother, they have a VERY HORN TD42 with a turbo setup by West End Diesel in their Tuff Truck Comp truck.

Know how you feel Andy. Like you I had a 95 GQ Ti that was in beautiful condition with 100klms and used mainly for the long trips with the camper trailer. I agonised about the conversion (V8 or TD6) for months and ended up trading it on a 99 GU TD6 turbo a couple of months ago. The old GQ is still sitting in the Nissan Dealer's yard up the road but I am more than happy with the new choice.
But on the other hand if I won the lotto I would be back straight up there an buyin the ole GQ back for the full conversion treatment I can tell ya.
Best of luck,
Choco
