Took the family up to Mt Stirling and Craig's Hut today - magic weather, lots of snow (couldn't get over Mt Stirling and had to take the Circuit Road) - but the trip was soured a little bit.....

There is currently heavy machinery up at Craig's Hut and the grounds are really chopped up, there are now cement ‘pads’ here and there for god knows what, bordered paths to the hut and inside the boundary fence. They are in the process of preventing access off the paths, they have ripped down the beautiful old border fence and replaced it with telegraph pole thickness uprights with a top rail. They have also removed the old rustic gate and put in a huge paling gate that looks like an inept DIY man has had a go at it. ……all in all it is a shame. I had read on here they were doing works however I never thought they would change it like they are. They have even dug up the snow grass around the hut and put matting down and seeded it – obviously in an attempt to keep people off.

I am now really glad I got my ‘Ken Duncan style’ piccies last trip….cause you couldn’t get a decent one anymore.

They are going to "access and improved and additional visitor facilities"...

Visitors Facilities? - What a Visitors Center with caps, badges, pins, and cheap chinese made Koalas?
Access? -> What a 4 lane freeway? Whats wrong with the 3 tracks into it now?

Craig's Hut redevelopment

Craig's Hut is a well-known and popular destination for locals and tourists alike and an icon of the Victorian high country. It is so popular with estimates of some 80,000 people visiting the site each year.

The main focus for the redevelopment of the site will include an upgrade of the parking area, rehabilitation of degraded sites, improved signage and access and improved and additional visitor facilities.

Work will be done in stages with approximately $150,000 to be spent this year. Improvements to be completed by the end of March include erecting a new information shelter, four picnic tables, two new viewing areas, seating inside the hut and a stabilised crushed granite path leading from the car park to the hut and its surrounds. Provided more funding is secured next year, a disabled access ramp, major improvements to the car park and repairs to the surrounding wooded fence are planned.
DSE asks visitors to Craig's Hut to be aware of the possibility of heavy machinery on the Circuit Road and the access track to the hut. There will be contractors and equipment working around the hut site until the end of March.

Yep, it was that post I was referring to.

Agreed, they are ruining it - it already has a different feel. Bugger it if people call us selfish, but I would prefer they make access more difficult, not easier.

80,000 visitors a year!!! Considering the hut is probably inaccessable during much of winter that means its open for about 274 days a year and on those days there would be approx. 292 visitors a day or 29 visitors per hour over a 10 hour day. Sounds like the place is probably being loved to death. Sad the the very popularity of Craigs Hut is leading to its downfall.

At least they are picking on something that is not REALLY a high country hut. Agree that a wonderful part of the world will be ruined, as long as they only do this one, and leave the others alone. Fat chance but.

Anywhere in Aussie, ask 100,000 people to name a Hut in the High Country, which hut do you think 999,990 will mention?

It maynot be a genurine hut, but its probably the only one people would know.

They are rebuilding the toll gate at Mirimbah so as all Stirling visitors will have to enter through Mt Buller and pay a day entry fee of $28.00.

also saw the works there and thought they were just re-doing the carpark. I hope that $28 is limited to the ski season
