Whilst doing a lap of Australia last year, we came upon a number of travellers who had made their own bbq from an old 9kg gas bottle.
I am keen to make one myself, and would like any comments and photos if possible.
The ones that I have seen have the top cut off, usually have an opening cut out of the side and some form of air holes around the base.
I have an angle grinder for cutting, but limited access for welding any bits.
I want to be able to use a billy or pan over the fire and have a small
camp oven which could also sit in the top.
The units were ideal as they were cheap, compact, mobile and only a small amount of wood/fuel was required.
It is easy to acquire an old gas bottle from a tip etc.

G'day Derek,
Just to answer your question regarding the bbq made from a 9kg gas bottle,
check out www.australianoutdoors.com they have a couple of photos of one with a bit of info, but you should
check out the "all-in-1" bbq made from an old keg, complete with photos etc on making one yourself, hope this helps.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your constructive help.
I have now cut the top off the gas bottle after first removing the tap and flushing out any gas by filling with water before applying the angle grinder. No Boooom.
Thanks again

Yep derekoverell - I'm with you. What's the problem?
Remove tap - fill with water = no gas left in cylinder - empty water (do it twice if you like) - cylinder now full of air - cut with angle grinder. Did the gas hide somewhere and nip back in when no one was looking? :)

Dave,
I like your idea.
Have a BBQ with your mates
Buy keg of beer.
With you mates make sure keg is empty
Cut top off the keg to make a BBQ
