Stevo
recently returned from a trip and my Nissan GU has developed a whine in 5th gear between 95 kms/hr & 110kms/hr. The whine is particularly noticable when the vehicle is under load.
The vehicle has done only 40000 kms and towing has been minimal ie. 16 ft glass boat on a few occasions.
I would appreciate any comments before I approach my local Nissan dealer.

What motor & year??.
At 40000ks assume you have a GU II.
Assume noise from gearbox.
There has been a problem with 5th gear stripping the splines on the main shaft. My 3.0L (mid 2000 deliv) let go at 72,000km and was fixed under warranty. They have upgraded length of splines on Main Shaft plus added additional boss thickness to 5th gear cog. Like you virtually no towing or hard use.
Just before it went a light whine/clicking developed (particularly noticeable when driving next to concrete barriers etc).
Assume that oil levels etc are OK of course.
Also Nissan change all fluids every 40k service.

Pete, its a 1999 4.2ltr turbo diesel and the noise is most certainly emanating from the gbox
