We are planning a trip for 3 - 4 months and have just started to consider having a house sitter live in our home while we are away.

Does anyone have any experience or comments on house sitters, the risks, the benefits, things you should be watching out for, etc?

Thanks,
Derek

are you in South Aust?

If so, we have an association here, that gives recommendations based upon previous sits.

My wife has a full time sitter working for her, and he does some pretty posh suburbs, and always comes out with good recommendations.

Maybe this is where you should be looking..... a Bona Fide sitting agency.

Also suggest you check your insurance to make sure there will be no surprises should a loss arise. Cheers

I had a house sitter for all of Septmember last year while we were in the outback. My father had one for 6 weeks over September-October while he was overseas as well.
Both of couldn't be happier! Our dogs were fed, walked & pampered. Our houses were treated with the utmost respect & were a pleasure to return home to.
Ours even had dinner in the oven, ready for us when we returned.
I reckon it is a 1000 times safer than going away & leaving the house unattended.

Thanks for the info. We are in Melbourne.

Checking the insurance is on my list before we do anything - thanks for the reminder.

I would appreciate knowing how Shaker & father found the house sitters they were so happy with. I have found several web sites offering contact points for home owners/sitters but it's difficult to work out which are more reliable than others. Perhaps sitters register with them all and vice versa. Any clues?

Looking forward to more info,
Derek
