Planning OZ trip from July 2006 for ~14 weesk and looking at ex-rental Hilux 4WD camper... Trailmaster (Dove conversion) or Hertz Safari/Packpacker Trekker (Safari conversion).
Safari... inbuilt awning, internal & External cooking, air con, etc; heavy (ish)
Dove... less creature comforts; less weight;
Plan to do GRR (incl
Mitchell), more travelled NT destinations and quick sojourn into Gulf and/or Cape country... dependent on time, road and marriage conditions at the time!
Any body had any experience with this type of vehicle? Pitfalls? Traps for the
young (
well, not so
young)?

I have seen a Single Cab 4WD Hi Lux with a pop top jayco hawk on the back, minis the running gear. The front bed slid out over top of the cab and was supported by a roof bar, the back end supported as usual. The tray had been made in such a way as to allow the ends to open as it normally would on the ground.
When up it didn't look top heavy at all, packed away looked fine, and the vehicle was on its way to the top from
Weipa, having been up through Cape Trib and
Cape Melville.
