Hi Mal,
The GPS would only need a remote aerial if it is located in a spot that is shielded from the overhead satellites.
I have a Magellan Meridian Platinum handheld, which snaps into a cradle mounted near the gear selectors on the centre console. Have never needed an external aerial and it includes a memory card slot for additional maps.
Your other specification however is one woth thinking about. (Large Screen)
No hendhelp unit has a really big screen, however, most can be connected to a laptop for better moving map display.
Failing this, you may like to investigate an "In-Car" navigation unit which certainly has a larger screen, but is less portable.
Here is a couple of WEB sites that may be of help to you.
Prestige Comms
GPSOZ
and of course there is the ExplorOz
Shop.

Mal ,
I needed the same things and bought a Magellan FX 324 MAP Colour. Can only load Magellan maps , but no hard drive to drop it's guts . Screen incredibly large and clear and I have poor eyesight .
Very pleased with it .
