I have a friend that has been looking for the Gearbox breather and can't find it does anyone know where abouts it would be or are they only on the transfer case, it's a 1977 FJ 40.

Only on the transfer case.
I think the gearbox relies on the ball and socket arrangement for the gear stick so it can breath.
Can't imagine your 1977 FJ40 is much diffrent in that area to the 1976 FJ40 I had.

Grey hair is hereditary, you get it from children. Baldness is caused by watching the Wallabies.

From memory the breather is screwed into the top – as the year model you mentioned has the one (1) piece transfer case with the 4 speed box.
If you can’t get to it from underneath the only other way is to remove the floor plate to get to it. Be prepared for the 10mm head bolts to be tight or rusted in. Then it’s out with the angle grinder and/or drill to remove them.
If you do have to destroy the original floor cover plate bolts best to replace them with stainless steel ones (for access next time) and even extend the breather up into the engine bay via tubing. You can then use the original breather or use a plastic fuel filter cartridge.
Hope this helps.

Hey Baz
I know the Disco is a very capable vehicle but do you really think you'll be able to do the Simpson crossing AND a spit roast all on Saturday night?? :-)
