Son phoned and said he's off to a mine at Burrup. I asked him where it was. "Don't know, don't care as long as they pay me" he replied.
So I looked it up....yep, ecological significance etc. Looked at my maps...zilch.
Ok I'll admit my ignorance. I know its north of Newman but where exactly ? Closest town ?

There is no mine as such at the "Burrup" but there is a gas plant. There is a port facility for an iron ore mine at Dampier which is about 5 ks away. The main accomidation would be in Karratha which is about 20 ks away

Dusty as buggery because of the nature of operations in the area, but the cooks are top notch- If he is in there get him to scam you in for one of their seafood nights- crays, prawns, squid, fish; It beats most of the other camps' seafood nights.

As the others say, it's just out of Dampier, one of the prettiest spots on the Pilbara
coast.Dampier that is. The big town is Karratha about 15 k's away, most facilities, quite a nice town but hasn't got the sea views of Dampier.
My brother lives in Karratha but at the moment the poor old bugger is driving the water cart on a job out of Paraburdoo and only gets home for one night a month.
Too hard for me I'm afraid.
If your son stays up North he should have a quid in 10 years if he looks after it.
Regards
Rob

Rob, he's a good kid (23) but owes the national debt. He's single also. He loves being in remote mines (fabrication) but I suspect that the bright lights will lure him away from there unfortunately.
10 years and he'd have more money than I'll ever see:(

Footloose, he's in the right spot alright. Good place, plenty to do and see and even if the job's crap, stick with it and he'll get his foot in the door for something better in the area. It's not a company town like it used to be and Karratha is the regional centre of the Pilbara so there's more to it than just mining. (a few available 'good sorts' around too!)

Tell him to buy a house as soon as he can get the deposit together, then his mates will help pay it off for him in 10 - 15yrs at the outrageous rental rates being charged. Huge heavy industry capital investment recently so it will have legs into the future.

There's a vacant block of land on the way to Dampier which has a sort of swap meet going on. Plenty of 4x4's, boats and vans for sale. Take your pick, some cheap, but most are just plain "dreamin!"

I only ever saw one cheap thing on dreamers hill- a quad bike that had its to-be purchaser next to it beating people off until he paid for it. Its one of the few places I've come across where the cars and boats are more overpriced than at the 2nd hand dealers lot.

Plenty of construction work going on in Karratha with Woodside's LNG 4th and possible 5th Train expansion and Burrup Fertiliser's plant under construction with a few others under way also. Rents are totally unreasonable, as are real estate values but the money is there for the taking.

Just to set the record straight, we moved from melb to karratha at the start of the year .The Burrup is a peninisula. At the base of it is the wharf facilities for the export of Iron Ore which is mined in Tom Price and Paraburdoo and sent to the ships via the biggest privately owned railway in the world. It also has the LNG plant and wharf for the procesiing of natural gas from the north west shelf project. There is also the huge salt farms operated by Dampier Salt. This also exported from Dampier. These three industries alone account for a huge part of the export earnings for Australia and with expansion planned will be an even greater contributor. The wharfs also import direct from Singapore all the Diesel fuel used in this area, which by the way is the old 500 ppm sulphur variety and is sold in all outlets up here apart from BP which brings low 50ppm from Perth. So owners of high tech diesels beware when re fuelling. As a 4wd destination it is worth exploration with many tracks and idyllic beach camping spots to be found. Dampier is the small town on the coast and is the gateway to the Dampier Archipeligo whisch is a series of islands which are a boating and fishing paradise. Karratha was established in the 70's and 80's as the commercial, residential hub of the area as there was not enough real estate at Dampier to allow this expansion.

Thanks for that, most interesting, especially the difference in fuels. I'd imagine a few visitors might get caught out.

Worked in Dampier in 1967 . Now that was a time when the North was a ROUGH place to be. Went back there last April for a couple of weeks and decided I like it much better this time.
