Hi all, any smart cookies out there that know of a 5 or 7inch screen such as used by incar dvd players that have connections for a 9 pin serial plug. I'm interested to try and connect my magellan gold GPS to a bigger screen with out going to the point of my wife nursing a laptop.
I know I can get a small computer to fit under the seat for $149.00
Or better still does anyone know if it's at all possible ?

thanks

Have you seen the screens from Lilliput (do a search on ebay) it is a Hong Kong company but easy to deal with , I have one of there screens mounted on my overhead for moving maps and an other type from them for my portable DVD , I am sure they will have one for your aplication

I have just seen that WES Components have a 7" Lilliput screen with both composite and VGA input, PLUS a touch screen function that connects with USB. Looks like just the thing for in-car navigation. I think I will have to get one for my Techno Hilux!
The direct VGA input makes computer connection a breeze and the touch screen is the icing on the cake!

HI ,I have the touch screen but find it hard to use as it is so small , so I have added a cordless mouse to the laptop and this works much better ,you can get these for around $50 and save the money on the screen not getting the touch option

I didn't know you could connect a GPS to a bigger screen. That would be cool.

However have you thought of buying a Pocket PC? This would give you a bigger screen (not as big as a Liliput) and the extra functionality of InCar navigation and OziExplorer CE. Plus whatever _Permanent_Painted_Coatings.aspx specific features it has.

Hi Utemad, I was going to buy a navman with bigger screen, but was told the Discover Aus had a better coverage of all Australia and Tas. city and country roads this disk came with the Magellan Gold Traveller Pack and it can be loaded with Great Desert Tracks the whole of both disks can be loaded on to 256 mb SD card which slips into the GPS.

Interesting thread, so if i buy a lilliput screen and plug it into the serial cable on my Magellan GPS it will work? or is it a bit more complicated than that?

A little more complicated than that, You'll need a PC in the middle.
Be it of the Laptop or Desktop variety.
You'll also need some software to communicate to both devices.
Something like OziExplorer for talking to the GPS.
And the driver disks that come with the Lilliput screen to make the touch component work. The touch screen connects to your normal VGA port on a computer for the pictures and back through a USB port for the touch screen.

Hope this helps, Geoff.

You might be right, only advantage the Lilliput's have are there super small size.
No need to make a bracket big enough to support a whole laptop with keyboard etc. inside the car.
You can stow the laptop under a seat or somewhere just as convenient.
Best way to operate a small touch screen is to get hold of a stylus from a PDA, no dirty finger mark smudges on the screen. Also a nice fine point for accuracy.

Just had the pleasure (10 minutes ago) of looking at a new GPS that uniden are bringing out. Touch screen about the size of a CD case (5 inch?) and seems to have some pretty good features. Might have to sell the Magellan. The rep tells me they will sell for about $1500.
