3.0 VL engine will fit as they came out with that engine, but you will also need the rest of the gear, Gearbox, wiring looms etc etc...

The L28 is NOT a straight swap for the RB30 engine which was fitted to Skylines, some Commodors, and the GQ Patrol. The latter in carby and injected form.
Your Patrol, an MQ/Mk was never factory fitted with this engine.
Now, (almost) nothing is impossible with engine transplants, and the RB30 is a great engine, but....................
You would need to source adapter gear (try Marks 4wd Adapters in Melbourne. Pricy, but good gear). And the conversion to fuel injection etc, etc.
Ask yourself is it worth the expense and labour of fitting an engine of unknown quality
Fitting a GQ gearbox/transfer case to the RB30 is too complicated,as the MQ has an offset diff, whereas the GQ does not. (Gearbox to transfer case hassles. Ugh!)
Do you need the worry and expense? Unless its a project......That's different!
The cheapest and easiest way to get the Patrol back on the road would be to find a good L28, or ask an engine reconditioner the cost of re-birthing your dead L28.
