Hi Mika,
I don't know about the 2.4lt surf but my 3lt varies hugely. The biggest factor I've found is how I drive rather than whether it's in town or on the highway.
After purchasing the car in June 2001 we averaged 350-390km to a tank 55lt around town. We tripped up to QLD with it fully loaded of camping gear and received the same mileage. We travelled at 100-110km/hr.
Had it serviced while in QLD and the mechanic merely said to change driving style.
We then tripped up to
Cairns (same amount of gear) and averaged 550km per tank. Merely drove at 90-100kmh instead.
Around town now average 400-450km. The trick is just not to plant the foot.
Anyway, Although this doesn't directly answer your question it may help.
Cheers
Greg

Hi Mika,
The best consumption out of our 2.4 manual was 10l/100k and the worst was 14l/100k. On a trip from
Perth to
Canberra and return, towing a 6x4 box trailer and sitting on 90 to 100k's we averaged 13l/100k.

hi mika,
i'ver got a 2.4 td manual surf and love it. Drive it carefully and you will get 500 km per tank at least....thrash it and you will pay the price. You will find, as the others have pointed out, that you will need to stick to between 90 and 100km/hr

My wife has 1990 2.4l turbo diesel but auto. It is definitely more hungry on the juice than the 2.8l manual 4runner we replaced.
