Hi All,
Just back from a weeks fishing in
Exmouth. On the way back I saw the strangest thing...but then again maybe I havent been out enough.
Parked up at one of the roadhouses and heading for
Perth was one of the big ford 4x4s towing a trailer and connected to that trailer was yet another trailer with a dingy on top.
Does anyone have any idea about the legality of such a combination? Apart from the obvious reversing nightmare it would pose, I wonder about stopping in a hurry.
This guy overtook us a few k's down the road and I didnt see any boats left behind on the road to
Perth, so I can only assume he made it through.
Any similar sightings?
Jeff

I'd bet money on it being illegal.
Cheers

We used to pull a caravan and behind it a boat with a F100 in Africa, was quiet common.

Yes quite common in Southern Africa. I was passed(whilst cruising at 120) by 7 series BMW towing a 24ft caravan and a 20 ft trailer sailer hitched on behind.
Legal? Who cares? As long as you can get away with it...lol

Holey CRAP that must have been heavy, a 20ft trailor sailer alone is about 2.1T !!
Must have been CHEWING some juice at those speeds!

We used to do it in the army, quite common for us to tow 2 trailers... If they were empty and were deeded somewhere else, we'd sometimes tow 3.

I don't know about the legality either but when one of my best friends was moving from
Chinchilla to
Bundaberg, He hitched a tandem car trailer loaded with furniture on the back of his F250 and then hitched a small 7 x 4 box trailer behind that.
When he got through to Biggenden the cops pulled him over in the middle of the night, and he handed them his roadtrain license. They went back to their car for about 10 minutes and came back and said that they didn't think it was legal but they weren't sure, and they told him to go on his way to
Bundaberg but to never do it again.
I would say that the paperwork involved for them was the issue and that is why they let him go.
Cheers,
Brett

what do you attach the second trailer to? (no towball on the back of the other trailer)

The back of the car trailer was a 100mm x 75mm x 12mm angle which he just bored a hole in it and bolted the new towball straight through.
Quite easy really and certainly safe enough.

He also made up a Double adaptor for the trailer wiring so the lights were working on both trailers

Two trailers.................yawn...................we do six!
Seriously.
We've got six single axle trailers that we tow behind a current model F250. They carry multiple lengths of 80ft poly pipe around a work site.
Currently thinking of building two more trailers to carry even longer lengths of pipe.
This setup never sees a public road though.
We thought of doing the two trailer thing to tow two trailer sailors but never did.

Hi Woobla,
I asked a policeman about that very same scenario one day and he couldn't give me an answer.
We both ende up agreeing that as long as the driver has a multi-combination ( ie, roadtrain ) licence, and he was on a legal roadtrain route there's not much they can do about it.

For it to be legal, all trailers must have brakes, the middle one must be licenced as multiple tow, and the tow vehicle must be licenced to tow multiple trailers. Obviously the driver must be licenced as such as
well.

and presumably, restricted to recognised road-train
routes...
correct???
Of course, the GTM would have to not exceed the rated towing capacity of the tow vehicle (no doubt not a problem with the F-trucks)...
Can't see a problem with it myself, provided that all of the relevant conditions are met...
