Can anyone tell me if you can travel from Andamooka to Farina via Mulgaria station across the top of lake Torrens . the last time I was in that area I was told the gates were locked . so ended up going across country from near stuart creek opel field to the borefield road

I rang the Mulgaria station about 8 years ago seeking permission to do that track but said it was definately closed to the public due to idiots coming through in the wet unanounced & causing too much damage. I have since seen in a mag somewhere he's changed his mind & now allows traffic through for a small fee. Would definately be worth following up. I think I rang the Marree Police for the number.
Cheers Craig................

Of course heading cross country on stations without permission is another reason why they close off these area's ;-))

I drove accross that track Easter last year from Farina to Andamooka. Was a VERY rough track in places. When you reach the station house which is about 70km from Farina, pull up and have a chat with the owner and give him the $30 to $40. Nice bloke (can't remember his name) and like most property owners loves a chat. Didn't have to ring or tell him I was coming as it is widely advertised up in that area - just make sure you stop at the homested. He actually gave me directions to drive across Lake Torrens, following a fence line. He had done it 2 days before for the first time in years as it was finally dry enough (its a short cut to Andamooka). It was very daunting being out there on my own in the middle of a salt lake. West of the homested the track gets fairly sandy, but still easily negotiated. Lots of station tracks and only bullet ridden tin signs, so make sure you get clear instructions from the owner. Will only average probably 40km/h for most of the track. I did it in less than a day but it was the final drive home, you could spend the whole day or even do an overnighter. Good luck and have a safe trip.

Cheers,
Hughesy

Thank you all for the feed back .I know what you mean by driving acroos salt lakes got stuck on one years ago and could not get out . we had to walk out and leave the vehicle overnight lucky we where in our own local area. came back the next day with as much recovery gear and rope as we could find pulled the car out ok but found that overnight mice had eaten heaps of the insulation of the wiring under the car . Salt pans are very nice to look at but have avoided them like the plague ever since.

We travelled the track at Easter, only a few weeks ago. There is a small charge which you can pay at Andamooka (the place with the bottle house in front) or at Mulgaria station if you can find anyone. The track is not too bad but there are a few good sandhills at the Andamooka end. Having said that, we had a convoy of 11 vehicles, 7 of which had off-road caravans and only one vehicle got momentarily stuck on top of a dune. So you should have no problems.
Cheers
