I have tried several times but we wre unable to get a permit. On one attempt I could only get an answering service and left a message and no one returned any calls. At onother attempt i spoke to the administrator who firmly told me that their was no hope of me getting a permit, they just did not want anyone there. That was a couple of years ago, things may have changed but it is a pitty as I believe that some of that country is very pretty. Best of luck.

Did that section the reverse way in 1997. Giles-Mulga Park-Uluru (also Western Gunbarrel, Connie Sue same trip).
I applied for a permit and waited 3 months for a reply which I never got. I took that as a yes and did the trip with no dramas.
That section is very important for Gunbarrel fans as it is the original eastern section, now renamed. It is very scenic. I only have to do the abandoned section and the last stage to Victoria Downs Station from Mulga Park and I would have completed the whole length of the Gunbarrel.
Cheers
