I am planning to travel to
Cape York in May-June 2006 and I am planning to take the bypass roads (ie the "easy way"). My intention is to tow an offroad caravan. I would be interested to hear anyone's opinion on the trip especially those who have done it with a caravan in recent times.

Tom it has been some time since I was up there, but I saw a mazda T3500 motorhome at Seisa that drove the bypass road and I feel it could be done without too much drama, just the corregations to take into account and the DIPS but the road conditions change every year so would be worth posting the question again just before you go to get more up to date road conditions.
Regards Trevor.

Totally agree. Conditions change from day to day. We've always found the Telegraph line to be as smooth as a babys bottom compared to the bypass tracks. I thought I knew corregations until I went on the Bypass road after the army had been playing in the wet...and I was in a leaf sprung vehicle...not nice

I have only been to
Cape York once, My plan was to take the Telegraph Track North and the Developmental Rd South.
Well I wish I had done the Overland Telegraph track in both directions. Yes its a tougher track and I don’t know how a van would go (not very
well I suspect) but the corrugations on the Developmental road were so bad words fail me.
Conditions do vary but I hope I never see corrugations like that again.
Having said that I will be returning to do it all again in June -July. It’s a great trip.
Cheers

Hi All,
I was up there in August/September/October and i did the OTL on the way up with my off road camper and it was like driving on a smooth normal road, But did the trip back by the developmental road and was cursing myself for not taking the same road
home as i did up.... the corrugations are stil echoing in my bones...
Have a good trip...
Peace...
Niikky
PS i'm going back up the cape again in June/July 2005
CAN"T WAIT.....

Yes the developmental road is as rough as guts.... but the main reason to take the telegraph road is the sencery. There is definatly nothing to see on the developmental road but corrugations

I have an interesting VHS Video put out by Corramel(sp) Caravans that shows them taking a CARAVAN up to
Cape York a couple of years ago.
It is available at various 4x4 shops around tha place.
Worth a look even though it doesnt answer your actual question
