Whitworths Marine have the Garmin Emap on sale for the bargain price of $299. These units are discontinued but used to sell for around $650. I bought one before my last trip Cairns- Birdsville-Maree-Coober Pedy-Oodnadatta-Alice- Uluru-and back home via Plenty Hwy Mt Isa Lawn Hill Karumba Cairns. The surprising thing about this Gps was vitually every trck we travelled on was pre mapped in the GPS. I can reccommend this unit and was pleasantly surprised by its performance at the price. Cheers Rob

I have an eMap and used it for a number of years - and love it. It was about $1,000 all up from Johnny Appleseed and included the eMap, Car holder, leather carry case, SD card, Garmin Metroguide and a combine data and 12 volt power cable.

I do however reckon there are better GPS's out there now for the money. Especially if you are going to use it with a PC or handheld like an Axim or IPAQ. If you are going to use it this way then you don't need a mapping GPS (which is what the eMap is).

Also, note that there is a base map loaded onto the eMap and with the use of the Garmin SD cards you can load on the Metroguide Australia maps which are good....but not brilliant. I have heard the Magellan Discover Aus??? maps are way better.

You cannot load any other maps directly onto the eMap other than the Metroguide.

Just beware, the price for the eMap might be good however if you want to load the Metroguide maps on you will need to buy a memory card - and the only ones it accepts are the Barmin SD cards - and they are very expensive. I would just caution on making sure you add up all the 'extra' costs of setting up an eMap - but with all that in mind - it is a good robust unit that has never let me down. It is also nice and easy to use.

Thanks for that. I am starting to run short of time before the big trip. Setting up Oziexplorer on a new lappie and mucking around to gain familiarity seems a waste of time when I'll have paper maps and a gps anyway. But one of these seems to be a sort of half way point, especially if they are useful in the bush. If it saves me from taking one wrong track then its paid for itself I rekkon :))

Why load metro guide, no use in the bush. The Emap has all the roads and tracks you need including altitude. For $299 you can't go wrong, as Moggs said he paid $1000 and loves it. I can't see the point in taking fragile expensive PCs into the bush. Cheers Rob

The E-Map is a quite capable machine, especially the fact that you can put in a good size memory card, say a 16MB and cover large areas. For $300 you can't get a mapping unit anywhere near that price these days, considering it is about the price of a GPS72, which is a non-apping unit. If it has 12 months warranty on it, go for it! Buy it!
