HI out there--would like to hear from anyone who has towed a van from bourke to tipooburra,noccundra,innaminka(via walkers crossing)then birdsville.We have a 16ft (poptop)off road van--do you think we can cope ok.We shall be heading off the end off august,planning to be in birdsville for the races on 3rd sept. any advise would be appreciated.Regards Gertie

A well set up offroad van would have no trouble over that route, only problem is without looking it's hard to tell from the brief discription if yours is. What type of Van is it?
Coil or leaf?
What's the tow vehicle?
Ever been outback?
You should also check the road conditions immediately before you go to ensure there's been no local rain or that the Cooper creek at Walkers crossing has not flooded the area.

You won't have too much trouble doing that trip provided you have enough spare tyres - not just for this trip but anytime travelling on dirt. Do your vehicles wheels and tyres match the caravan? This is a good idea - if not make sure you have two spares for each and cover the back windscreen of your vehicles with cardboard carton and duct tape to stop the sontes flinging back from the front of your van and breaking the back windscreen. Check your dates though because the Races are on Friday 2 and Saturday 3 September and as about 5,000 people come into town you will need to be here a few days early to get a spot in town. Thanku both Craig & Ruth for your replies-we are quite experienced off-road travellers but normally we have done so with off-road camper-this will be our 1st with van-been to golf before(not this route),up to the cape(via telegraph line),towed normal poptop van up centre & down west coast,across nullabor,using a tent to go off roading at various places-we are towing with a toyota landcruiser 80 series,fitted with air bags,snorkel,special shield for back window-van is a viscount newport new generation,inderpendent suspension-tyres interchangeable car & van-will be travelling with a group,two of us towing off road vans,the rest with off road campers-planning to arrive in birdsville wed before races--hope to meet u ruth--u dont remember a mad swiss couple called danielle & michel from last year(sept i think)-regards gertie
