Need to get replacement rims and tyres for my new hilux. Is their any difference or benifits with having 15inch or 16inch rims? Looking at getting cooper stt or BFG muds. Not sure on tyre size looking at 31,10.5 or 265/75 r16 or 235/85 r16.

15in tires are cheaper, but wont fit all trucks.. most new trucks have big brakes so require bigger rims.
what truck is it going on?

15" rims are cheaper, and I found getting tyres for 16" instead of 15" set me back an extra $80... quoted 33" MT/Rs on 15" rims at $260, 33" MT/Rs on 16" rims at $340. If you can fit them, go for the 15"s!

15 inch wheels and tyres are cheaper
16 inch wheels and tyres are stronger - the tyres will have much higher load index.

hound, I've got a new 'Lux. Befor I took delivery I had Bob Jane take the HT's off and replace with 265/70/15s. They have a load rating of 112, which is the requirement for the vehicle. I put them on the original alloy wheels. Got a pretty good price ($700 change over for 5).
If you go for 16 inch rims, I doubt that you will get 85s on without a body lift. Might even struggle with 75s.
My original thought was to put 16 inch rims on, but stayed with 15s largely because of cost, but also the dicking around with speedo etc.
I'm now happy with what I have.

One should note that one model of the Hilux, the SR5, has 15" rims and others 16" rims. Ergo one should be able to change over to 16" rims without any pain. The overall diametre of the 15" and 16" with tyres fitted is the same. I was told the 15" are fitted to the SR5 because they look better! Matter of opinion. Do a search and you will find some discussion already on this subject.

There are only 2 tyre types available for 15 inch hilux rims. 255, 70 R15. This is what the SR5 tyre plackard lets you put on. Anything bigger or wider will void insurance and RWC. If you want to get around this you will need an engineers report followed by a change of tyre plackard before the insurance will accept it. I been down this path and it costs about $500.00
Some non SR5 models have 16 inch wheels with a particular tyre size specified. Once you go wider or replace with wider rims you will need to repeat the process above.
Unless you do not have insurance or want to be covered by your insurance or want to be covered by your states compulsary registration insurance. Having said that half of the vehicles around
Mansfield are in breech of their insurance.

In Qld you can go to a 30*9.5R15 and stay within RWC condifitons. They allow 15mm increase from max size on placard.
Interesting to note on the latest Qld transport regulations they have removed any reference to 15mm increase in diameter. So not sure whats going on! Seems a new edition was released in Jan. Might call and find out.
Cheers,

The 30/9.5/R15 BFG AT is actually just a bit smaller than my Bridgestone 691 255/70/R15. So this should not put the insurance or legalities into question unless the rating does not comply. I have a set of each and they definately are smaller.
The 255/70/R15 is between the 30/9.5/R15 and the 31/10.5/R15 in size.
I cannot remember if there is a difference in speed rating or compound. I am not normally a law abiding person all the time in fact I get a kick oout of being a "non-conformist". However I do not want either of my vehicles to be uninsured at all as I do push them into situations where damage may occur. I always make sure that they are legal. It simply is not worth it to not be. An accident with a non insured vehicle may result in millions of dollars damage or compensation. And guess what happens if you are non complient. The insurance company will wash their hands of it and leave you (or me) responsible for the whole lot.

Working in the insurance industry in Queensland, the answer from my underwriters is that as long as the replacement tyre doesn't exceed the original diametre in height it is legal. If your tyre is wider and protrudes from the guards you must place wider flares over the wheel arches to cover the tyres. You would only need a modification plate if fitting larger diametre tryes than standard.

Hi,
I get delivery of my new hilux SR5 Dual Cab next month. The dealer asked me if i wanted to go with an option of changing over to the 17" Prado rims instead of the stock standard 15". I obliged without hestiation as i consider these rims to look much better. Local Tyrepower here in
Perth is doing the Speedy Rims ( Prado Rims ) with Khumo tyres for $1100 changeover. I opted to go for the Cooper ATR 265/65/17 for a changover price of $1500 including rims. These will look awesome, cant wait.
I also called Toyota Technical Support and they said this would not be a problem whatsever.
Cheers Rooboy

Rooboy,
They will fit no problem. I'm running 31-10.5 R15 with navara offset rims on my 2005 single cab hilux, 10mm larger dia than 265/65 R17.
Tested the 31's on the weekend and only sightly rubed once on full lock going down
hill and around a switchback over rocks.
