Hi I'm brand new to this
forum and I've just purchased my first ever 4wd.
The vehicle I purchased is a 96 3.5 dohc pajero auto gls with just 112,000 k's.
I paid $19,990 from a dealer. My question is, does anyone know of any problems I should be aware of with this model or the motor, and beside the fuel consumption and power difference how does the 3.5 compare with the 3.0 in relation to things like reliability, maintenence costs etc

G'day 4wheeler,
I also had a 3.5dohc auto, was a good vehicle but very thirsty when pushed hard (almost all the time in my case) 25-30 lt/ 100km when towing was not uncommon. At 112k in your case make sure the timing belt has been changed (due at 100k if I remember right) big $$ if it breaks. The spark plugs are a b##tard to change so I let
mine go to 150k before I changed them (also expensive job). Other than that regular servicing was comparable to other petrol vehicles, 15 thousand intervals for
mine. If I remember there was controversy over this, some log books were stamped for 15k intervals some for 10k. This vehicle suprised me and a few diehard modified cruiser fans offroad more than once, driven carefully this car will take you were ever you want to go. Good luck with yours and welcome to a very good
forum.
Regards Trevor.

Thanks trendy for
the tip, After reading that I'm now trying to find out if the timing belt has been changed.
The service book shows that it had a service at 100,00 kms done by ultratune, mechanic made notations of ' minor service, t/belt-ch ' now I don't know if ' ch ' means checked or changed, tried ringing the ultratune branch this arvo but were closed, will try again monday. Also might try contacting previous owner to find out what the paj was used for. It didn't come with a tow bar so it most probally wasn't used for towing, and the two holes in the roo bar for spotties are clean not a mark or scratch so no spotties were ever fitted plus underneath is clean so I would say it wasn't used for serious off roading. Thanks everyone for your comments. regards
malcolm

Ch , would be Changed.
If you have gone to the trouble of checking it , you would change it . . . its a prick of a job.
Ultratune are good for that . . . if the book says to change . . . they will.

G day welcome to 4 wheeling great car the pajero. Another thing to watch out for is the valve guide seals. They tend to wear on 3.5s watch for smoke when backing off. Had
mine done at 150 000 and maybe get your harmonic balencer checked. Very happy with
mine would definately buy another

Welcome to the world of 4WD. I sold a 99 3.5 Paj last year, 146,000 Km. I must support the comment about the timing belt. It is important that this has been changed. If not get it changed as there would be nothing worse than losing go forward at a critical moment. Plugs are platinum tips and very expensive. I change
mine at about 110,000 and do the fuel injectors at the same time. Cheaper than doing the injectors stand alone. Careful with the replacement kits as there were some around(genuine Mitsubishi) that were of poor quality. Injectors leaked. Nothing like that to start a fire.
Other than fair wear and tear I had a great run. I now own an NP series Paj.
