I've just disassembled my winch to service and clean it up and I found the gear box had what I think is plain motor oil in it. Anybody know if this is correct or if it should actually be grease of some sort?

Never mind.
I found this site which is a different model but near enough to answer all my questions.

Wizz,

this is the page I followed for mine. I used Penrite extreme pressure grease.

Just pulled my 9000 lb Warn winch apart before I put it into my new Patrol and it still had the original grease in it so I cleaned the old grease from the gear box and relubed it with Promar high quality grease.
cheers

Click here and follow the link down the page to the Warn 9000 rebuild instructions.

Hope this helps.

Don't use the wrong grease. Any thicker than cream and you'll have heaps of resistance on free spool.
