Dear All

I have a 2005 GU 3.0L. Went I am accelerating and the motor is climbing from 1500rpm to 2500rpm I can hear a hissing noise from the general direction of the turbo. Is this normal? I have a mate with a 2000 GU and he says that he does not have the same noise. Could it be that the waste gate is stuck open? I have checked all the clamps on the intake pipes and through the inter-cooler and found nothing strange. The motor still pulls well.

Thanks

Angus

It could just be the air being sucked in like there is no tomorrow....do you have a k&N air filter....I have heard that sorta noise on normal cars with that air filter in....?? My thoughts anyway

My post 20917 may be of interest - you may not have the same but it seems that IF the engine is struggling for any reason to get enough inward airflow, these noises can develop from a variety of places as the air is pulled in through any available passage. Maybe a short test run without the filter etc ?

Much learned comment below - I just reiterate that I could have sworn on a stack of VB slabs that my turbo was going to blow- it sounded like a whipper snipper, snipping it's head off - came in under load etc while accellerating - but no.....not the turbo - was all to do with restricted air inflow on the filter / snorkel side... but.....mMay well be the gas outflow side as suggested.....let us know but !

I have a 2003 3.0 and the noise sounds like a high pitched whistle?? only on and just after start up when accellerating. I have been informed it is the EGR valve and am organising replacement through warranty
hope this helps

Deano

Thanks for the reply. The noise is more prevalent once the engine has warmed up.

Where is the EGR valve?

Thanks

EGR valve is on the drivers side, near the back of the motor just about where the head joins the block. Has electrical wires and connector protruding from it.

Check that all you intercooler hose clamps are tight. Any place for air to escape will cause the turbo to whistle. Also check for any holes at the same time.

I recently found a hole in one of my silicone intercooler hoses that made the turbo whistle, went away after fixing.

Do you have a snorkel, very common to have air rushing sounds from the snorkel...

Mine became heaps more noticable after fitting the snorkle and getting rid of that stupiud bit of rubber over the inlet.

The sound varies under load revs etc

Not sure if the 3.0 has variable vanes in the turbo though ?

Glenn.

Hissing noise from the turbo means that it’s working. The turbo's impeller spins at extreme rev's, this makes a whistling noise when turbo kicks in with acceleration as the boost builds.

Lux, its not the sweet sound of a turbo screaming that we're talking about, this is a distinct 'problem' sound.

Farside,
It's quite normal. Mine did the same and the Dealer told me it is the variable vanes in the turbo working at different angles dependent on load and acceleration.
If you try backing off the throttle a bit and then accelerating again you will hear the sound change.

Happy motoring,
Graeme.

A loud squealing hiss like a deranged kettle and it could be the gasket in the pipe near the EGR valve. Did one up at Narrabri earlier this year. Mechanic there said the retaining bolts "fall out" of the GU's and the high gas pressures stuff the gasket, sometimes even warping the pipe. Prob needs a new bolt firstly and also maybe a new gasket.

gid'ay farside
mine starts the turbo whistle around about 3000revs under acceleration back off just a touch it stops,it still whistles at 3500 to 4000 same deal back off abit it stops, hold at any of these rev ranges not accelerateing no whistle, has been like this from new.my opinion is its air being sucked in under acceleration,i have a snorkel fitted with the cyclone pre cleaner removed.hope this info helps.regards toohey
