Dear all,
I am considering purchasing a satellite phone for use on trips into remote areas of the
Flinders Ranges.
Can someone tell me what the deal is with getting it connected, or what is necessary to be done before it can be used?
Cheers,
Barney.

I just went to buy a second hand unit
$400.00 from 4WD centre at Moss Street
Brisbane
Before purchase I enquired on costings
Globalstar.com said
$200.00 to connect
$35.00 per month plus call charges
can stop any time eg after your trip is over you can stop plan
This sounded great except
every time you want to reconnect it cost you $200.00
so I decided to hire
Suggest you contact Globalstar direct.

Barney,
I have just purchased a new sat phone connected with the Iridium network. Globalstar for me priced themselves out of it.
Shop around, there are numerous plans and prices available.
What ever you do, do not rely on a telstra
shop for accurate info. They told me I was wrong on one issue, then I provided a document to prove otherwise,
well sometimes it good to have a win and see a know all manager squirming in his
seat.
Sorry not relevant but I do fill better now.

TR Telecom. $30 pm/ no calls. Can suspend at $15pm and retain same number. No contract with this plan, if It doesnt work I can change easily. Im curious to see how it works out, will know in a few months I suppose.

Hi Barney,
Can I ask a couple of questions?
• How often will you have the need for a Sat phone.
• Do you live on a rural property.
If the answer to the first dot point is once every couple of years, you should consider rental.
On the second point, if you are on a
farm or live outside a serviced area (remote), the Federal Government has a subsidy, which will allow you to purchase the phone for as little as $800.
Also be aware that some makes (models) do not perform
well in cloudy conditions or enclosed environments such as mountainous terrain.
Regards
Kim
