Gidday all,
I have a mate who wnats to buy a 99 2.8TD Patrol with 96K on the clock, the dealer wants $27,000. He intends on towing a horse float with it, does it have enough to pull it or not and is the money OK.
Anyone with experience?
Thanks Mick

IMO , no it wont.
A Friend of
mine owns a 2.8 and he tows his Campertrailer with it , but he says it runs out of puff REAL quick.
Nothing wrong with the actual vehicle and or motor , but towing ISN'T what you buy one for.
Look elsewhere.
PS , $$$ is certainly highside.
You can buy 98/99 4.5 Ti Patrols for that sort of money (not that you would , but , in comparison)

I was driving a 97mdl last week and it was running out of puff going up a
hill in a 90km/h zone which I felt it should of done fairly easily and that was without a load or towing. I personally would have a rethink about the vehicle.

I think that model also has a lighter duty gearbox (same as the Nissan sedans/coupes) than the others of that era and may not be suitable for heavy duty towing.

For that money you will get a 100 series standard 6 cylinder diesel in NSW. Far better for towing.
I know what I would rather have.

I have a 98 2.8tdi GU with 170000kms on the clock. And, other than regular servicing and tyres I have not had to spend a penny on it. It has been totally reliable and while a bit underpowered (low down) it still handles anything any other standard 4x4 will off road. That said, I don't and wouldn't use the vehicle for towing anything other than the old box trailer to the tip.
The price seems a bit high to me also.
Cheers
Pete
