Help needed - Driving from Newcastle to Young

Ok all you New South Wales peoples.. help is needed. My girlfriend (and another female friend) plan on driving on Friday afternoon from Newcastle to Young (and return trip on sunday arvo) to see another friend.
I've checked suggested routes on both whereis.com and also travelmate.com. One is suggesting going out through Blue Mountains (ie Lithgow/Bathurst etc), the other is saying to go to Goulburn/Canberra then out to Young ?

Timeframe isn't the biggest issue (although the quicker the better), mainly trying to give them the easiest route to take.

What you all think ? (i'm currently going for the Canberrra option)

For peace of mind: the car is a Hyundai Excel (although i did offer her the Frontera for the weekend) The two girs are 23y/o and both 'good' drivers.

I'd go Goulburn/Canberra only because of the roadworks in the mountains it's a pain to go through there at the moment.

Redback's right. The road (I won't call it a highway!) through the mountains sucks big time.

No question.

Goulburn , Yass, Young. Other then the last 60 odd k's from the Hume Hwy into Young , its all Double lane highway.

The road between The Hume and Young is a good road, we travel out that way all the time.

Have a look at this on your map, it'l beat the traffic.

Newcastle, Denman, Merriwa, Gulgong, Wellington, Molong, Manildra, Canowindra,Cowra then Young.Just a good country drive.
