Hi all,

I just purchased one of these using Ebay, great accessory for the glove box. Not bad for $50.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5203697964&ssPageName=MERC_VIC_RSCC_Pr4_PcY_BID_Stores

In order to calibrate the unit, I need a few drops of alcohol solvent (10%). I have googled "alcohol solvent" but don't get a meaningful answer.

The question I am hoping someone can help me with is.

What is alcohol solvent ? Where can I get it ?

Thanks in advance
Phil P

I think you can use isopropyl alcohol.
You can get it from a chemist, might help to ask them to confirm this.
We use it a work as it dosn't have a residue I believe it is pure alcohol.
Time for a beer now:)
I have a similiar Breatho unit though I have not tried the solvent clean as I havn't found my unit misleading yet. I regulary have two beers wait 10-15min and do a test, always the same 0.04BAC
Have you tried to email the ebay seller you brought if of?, Just a thought.

Hi Phil,

I've had a look at the tester on Ebay and it looks like a good unit, but beware there are a few traps. Alcohol is a solvent, it depends on what type of alcohol they are referring to. Alcohol in beverages is ethanol, but there are many others; methanol, acetone, ketone and toluene to name but a few, and mostly they are poisonous. I would suggest they are referring to ethanol, but I can't be certain. A 10% solution is 10% alcohol and 90% distilled water. Probably you're local pharmacist will be the best person to organise a pure 10% sample, as it can be measured in different ways, which may result in totally different callibrations. Either that or talk to the seller, and have him supply the solution. Be wary of these cheap breathalysers, they should not be relied upon, and can give a VERY false sense of security. They are a good party trick though. Cheers Ferris

Metho is 96% ethanol, it's on the label.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

I deliberately didn't mention metho as it is not a pure source of ethanol. It has an additive designed to make you vomit should you drink the stuff.
