This might seem strange? but will an electric winch work if under water e.g. if stuck in river etc, purchased a 80 series with winch and supposedly only used twice on light work, what sort of servicing is required as don't have manual or instructions for it.
hope you can help!

if you can keep the water out of the motor then, yes it will operate underwater, but this usually proves to be short-lived or impossible for any length of time. Keep contacts servicable and clean and change the gear-box oil once a year if used at all. 90 gear oil is what it likes. Be aware that this brand of winch is very thirsty on batteries and will drain heaps of amps when worked. Short winching times and the use of a snatch block are manditory.

Having had aThomas EW8000 for over 20 years with absolutely zero probs, they are great winch. while slower than a Warn or similar they will out pull most.
Regular servicing and oil changes as well as greasing will keep it running.
It uses ATF in the high speed gearbox and 90 grade in the other.
I've got a copy of the owners manual somewhere too.
from memory you can dowload the manual and parts list from the website.
