I have been looking on the net for some information regarding the towing capacity of my 2.2L toyota 4runner (1986). For some reason i can't find the vehicle mass of my car anywhere on the car, and the net is useless for what i'm really trying to find, and that is the towing capacity. Does anybody actually know how many kilograms i can tow, or at least can tell me where i can the information i need.

Hi Finito,
this is the only useful(???) information I could quickly come across on the net... It comes from the following site: http://www.usenetcars.com/archive/index.php/t-125044.html

The question:

I have a 1986 Toyota 4Runner that I will be using to haul water. I'm in the
middle of moving, so I can't find my repair manual to see what the gross
towing capacity is. All I am looking for is the original vehicle's capacity
as I have not changed the gearing at all - only the tire size. I now run
31x10.5s.

Thanks in advance
Layne

The answer:

My '85 manual gives a max towing weight of 2000lbs.(900kg) . Yours
should be the same.

I'll keep looking as this sounds far too light...

The Gross Combination Mass (GCM) should be shown on the registration papers.

Maximum towed weight is irrelevant because it assumes an unloaded tow vehicle

Load 500 kgs onto the tow vehicle and u have to reduce the trailer weight so as not to exceed the GCM..

Bear in mind too that towing capacities , both braked and unbraked are usually on bitumen, not on dirt or off road.
On road towing capacities are usually listed on original brochures as well as rego papers. Rarely in the owners manual which is pretty stupid.
Most later vehicles have towing caps on a plate on the towbar as well as ball weights but these may be the bar manufacturers rather than the vehicle manufacturers.

Have a look on the Hayman Reese website. They list a towbar of 1250/90kgs for the 4 runner.
