Hi,
Can anyone tell me if there's a council run/owned caravan park/camping area at Mission Beach in Nth QLD? A friend told me there is but I can't find anything about it.

thanks

matt

I think it's the "Dunk Island View" caravan park. 07 4068 8248. there are a few around Mission Beach but that's the council one, I think. We've got it earmarked for next year.

We stayed in one up there a few years ago and it was called something palms caravan park..has a sister park in Cairns. It was very well run and neat and tidy.Walk across the road straight onto the beach, free gas barbies and good facilities including a games room and tv room.

One thing we found about most "council" parks was that they were no cheaper than the regular parks and the facilities were usually, not always, of a poorer standard.

As an example we intended to use a Mackay Council park next to a mangrove swamp, after we read the sign of what was not permitted there we saw the cost of camping was $22 per night. We stayed at a park in for $20 a night in quiet little spot called Haliday Bay right on the beach (not mangroves).

The park in Mission Beach is quite small. It is right in town next to all the shops. Usually has a large selection of backpackers, etc. We also stayed at Dunk Island View which is in Wongaling Beach, further south of Mission Beach, at lot quieter and less traffic than Mission Beach, but only 10 minutes drive away with the beach across the road.

The Council Park you're looking for is about 3 kilometres north of the Mission Beach townsite.
As the road turns left away from the water after a very winding section of road there is a hard to spot turnoff to the right.
We stayed there June 2003 for about $8 per night. Facilities are a toilet/cold water shower block.
Fantastic location right on the edge of the beach, if you can get in. Only about 8 sites from memory.

Remember to consider staying at South Mission as there is a very nice park there and the area is not nearly as crowded as North Mission Beach which is where most tourists and backpackers end up.

The council park is beside tourist information on the beach side of the road. $10 per night for unpowered. As council parks go it was very nice.
