Well, I have just read on the net, on a photographic forum, that one of the 12 apostles has finally succumbed to the rigours of the ocean, and collapsed.

I do not know the veracity of this report, but seeing the post on the forum in the US, and the type of forum it is, I guess I will believe it unless proved otherwise.

Cheers

Oh dear....

I thought I was bringing you guys all the very latest from around the world!!

Talk about a cub reporter....

Anyway, like Muddy said, 8 are left standing.

I guess when another goes down, we'll have to give 'em another name, say like the.... Magnificent Seven, or something.

No worries Wolfie,

It does show the power of these type of internet forums. This event only happened at 9am this morning and by late afternoon the news is all over the world. Brilliant!

Typical bl**dy Victorians. Advertise it as 12 apostles and only come up with 8 of them. Mmmm, wonder if the fair trading people know about this.

John, how many were there at their height?

I guess there must have been 12 to begin with at one stage, otherwise I am wondering why they were called the apostles.

It wasn't till Muddy pointed out to me, that we are now down to eight.

Cheers

Ian there may well have been 12 of them 50 million years ago but ever since I can remember it has been about 9, Now 8.

Maybe try a web search for info.

As I said a bit of a misnomer, I guess some explorer could not come up with a better name 150 years ago.

John R lives down that way maybe he can spread a little local knowledge on the subject

Spot on Ray.

Actually I remember being told something about them originally being called the 'Sow and Piglets' and the sow was the biggest one or an Island or something like that.

There may well be 12 of them but they might be spread way down the coast out of sight of the main group.

Lots of islands further down, "Mutton Bird Island" being the one that the Lock Ard rammed so maybe they have included some of these in the original 12.

Possibly not as spectacular as when W51449 fell down quite a few years ago down there. A couple were trapped on the isolated section of rock, and were then the subject of lots of tv cameras as they were rescued.

Difficult part was that they were a married couple - but not to each other. Oooops .. shades of Warney on that.

I was there 3 weeks after that event, and I vaguely remember something about people stranded or something.... all very sketchy.

The mind boggles with what sort of excuse you could fabricate...

"Ummmm, hell, I dunno. Like I was at the service station filling up, then POOF!!! I was all of a sudden here."

"Yeah, that's right, he was filling up, and I was like bending over the freezers in Coles, looking for something to eat, and POOF!!! I was also beamed here.":

I wonder what they REALLY had going through their minds, alone on that rock, in front of all the media..... bit like Big Brother springs couple on fang rock!

See what happens....

They watch 3 episodes of CSI Miami, they then start wearing their sunglasses on their necks like Horatio, and can now identify which rubble was an apostle!

God help 'em if they get a hold of those little blue lights, and a pair of orange tinted glasses....

If you go along the road as I did last week on way home from JohnR's, there are photos of the 12 of them... or 12 mounts poking out of the water!

From http://www.tourvic.com.au/ocean_road/attractions/apostles/

"It is debatable as to how many Apostles there really are. Although only 9 exist above the water there is reminance of another 4 to 6 apostles, underwater. The Apostles themselves lay where the original coastline used to be. Pounding waves from the Southern Ocean, rain and gail force winds have eroded the soft limestone rock which used to incase the Apostles. Approximately 10 million years ago the whole area was actually under water. As the polar ice caps were formed the ocean subsided back to where it lays today"

Bruce I don't doubt that there may have once been 12 of them but ever since I was a little kid I can remember asking my parents where the other 3 are?

I have never seen a photo of all 12, would be interested to actually see one that showed all 12 but as I said above I think it was before our time.
