Hi,

I have a 1991 Hilux 2.8 Diesel with an unmodified engine besides the extractors which the previous owner had installed.

I love the vehicle and it has been amazingly reliable and tough.

I have a feeling that it has never really been running at full power since I bought it though. I am not interested at all in putting a turbo on it, but I'd like to maximise the power output without modifying it.

It has done 200K, and whilst there is no black smoke from the exhaust, I'm wondering if the injectors may want changing? Any comments?

Any other suggestions for servicing/adjustments which can be made to improve power? The torque seems okay, but the acceleration from standing start is really weak. Top speed is normally about 120 kph, but sometimes it will only get to just over 100...

Thanks.

Benjamin.

If you can get 12O kph out of it then I would suggest that it is going OK.

I run a 3 l no turbo diesel Hilux that goes pretty well, but 120 kph is also its max. Will run all day at 100 to 110, but of course when it hits any hills, its turn off the air and gear down change time!!!

Into a head wind 100 kph is just about as good as it will get (dualcab with a "highrise" canopy).

Power is not normally a word that you associate with small toyo diesels!!

Great in the bush though.

cheers

Hey Benjamin, I posted a question for my cousins hilux, he has the same 2.8 and lack of power, I think he had pump problems but after all was fixed it still lagged abit. It took one smart mechanic to solve his problem in 60 sec..His floor mat was tucked under the accelerater pedal, did'nt he feel a few sandwiches short of a picnic.
Anyways all the feedback to his question on this site regaurding turbo was very positive, maybee dont count it out...

With 200,000kms on the clock it would be well worth getting the injectors done.Got a quote today to have mine fully rebuilt(190,000kms) today,$270 the lot.Once I have these done Im banging on the turbo Ive got sitting in the shed.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice.

The $270 charge for the injectors, is that a rebuild of the existing injectors or replacement with new ones? I was advised that at 200K to simply replace them.

Thanks.

change over injectors are around 50 to 70 dollars each with labour but add on a bit more coz they will usually fiddle with the pump a bit as well. If its not smoking and it does 120 yea haaaa dont touch it that is red hot for a 2.8. I have driven ones that do the same speed in 3rd and 4th 90kph and as for 5th forget it!!!!!!!

Ben,

I have a '95 2.8D hilux and have noticed incremental gains from fitting two hiclones, a K&N air filter and servicing the injectors. All pretty expensive to gain only incremental advantages but my truck is a hobby so I am happy with the results considering it is a ten-year-old diesel with 150000k on the clock. When I bought mine about a year ago I took it to a reliable diesel mechanic and told him to check it out and make sure that there was nothing wrong with it and since then I have only changed the oils and tinkered with the mods above.

Sounds like your truck is going fine. Remember: if it ain't broke, don't fix it : )

These gains that you got - did you do the hicolse/air filter and injectors all t the same time?

Reason i am asking i want to work out if the hiclones actually made a difference and the air filter as well serperatly..

what fuel economy do you get?

Hiclones were last year some time and K&N was only recently. I get 8L/100km on average and that is not very much highway. If I were you I would get the air filter first. I think that made a bigger difference

Hi spinach88, as said by timber 120klm on a flat road with no head wind 130 is the most I have ever got out of mine on the m4 in western suburbs of sydney but it takes a while to get there, only ever did that once just to see what it would do that's with a very slight down hill grade. If you can manage 100/120klm on a flat road it's going fine as one of the other blokes said if it aint broke dont touch it. My injectors and pump were done at about 210,000 I now have 270klms on it. I only had my'n done because the injector pump started to seep out one of the seals cost me $800 dont no whether I got ripped off or not but I've had no trouble since. As said if your injectors or pump need doing it would be blowing a sh@t load of smoke under moderate acceleration. My hilux has been round oz, will generally sit on 100 klm all day no problems even with air on try pushing it to 120 and you will use ableepload more fuel and to me I don't like to flog it ,I have done it if i'm overtaking but generally there overtaking me, uses on average 8/9 litres per 100klm on the open road with a load of about 500/600kg in the ute with canopy, that's not towing anything. I'm extreme with oil changes I do my'n every 2500klm with filter but in the process of running it to 5k see how the oil is. The only engine mod my'n has is Genie extractors and exhaust. Take Care Vitara
