Following the diverse, but as usual good, advice from you guys last night I took the plunge and bought a swag (it was John with his veiled hint of the erotic aspects of a swag which really pushed me - now all I need is the female, hmmmm.... :)

Anyway I bought one of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=36120&item=5217559775
but from these people who currently have them on special for $200
http://www.grangerscampingworld.com.au/

Looks good as far as I can tell. Lots of stitching in the places it should be. Big butch zips everywhere. Lots of steel loops and bits of velcro the purpose of which I can only speculate! :) 70mm mattress which seems OK at the moment but if it flattens I'll replace it with my 100mm self inflating one.

So far I have only tried it in my upstairs lounge which is not the most arduous of environments although the carpet could do with a clean and I opened a window to give it that "rugged" feel :) No feelings of claustrophobia but there wasn't much air movement and it was rather stuffy when the canvas was zipped up (improved when I opened the head “window”) - fair enough really: in an ambient of 20 deg. C I would only have the screen zipped up. Might be an issue on warm nights when it rains though?

I'll soak it in over the next few days then take it up to the High Country in a couple of weeks to give it a real test.

Thanks a lot everyone for your advice - both the "fors" and "againsts" it's listening to the balance which is so valuable.

Well, I thought I provided a convincing enough argument against swags, but I guess I didn't take into account the hanky panky side of things. Enjoy. Positions might be fairly limited though!

Agreed. I have, reluctantly, consigned the Batman costume to the bin :(

Contortionist!!!!! I'm 6 foot bloody 6 tall how do you contort in a swag :p

Anyway how would you know? LOL.

The biggest concern was someone seeing the "roof" bouncing up and down and asking awkward questions.

Mike no a lot of dollars if you don't like it I'm sure you will be able to offload and recoup some of it.

That was my feeling too John. For $200 it'll make a good test unit and I felt spending $400 or $500 on a top quality one was a bit risky without spending some nights in one first.

To soak or not to soak ... that is the question.

We bought a swag recently and were advised it wasn't necessary.

As was pointed out, the soaking is only to take up the stitching in the seams, so if no seams in vunerable areas, why bother ??

I guess it depends on the particular swag.

Cheers

Yea good point..

annoying how every shop has a different story for same article LOL!

Even worse when you buy a second hand one, only used once, NFI what the previous owner did with it...

Probably just get some SEAM SEALER and wack it on anyway, it cant hurt - can it? Never used the stuff.

Yep ... wouldn't hurt. Used it to success on the CT seams. Simply a candle sans wick.

Waited till canvas was hot from the sun and wiped it along the seams. Certainly worked.

If it does rain Mike it might pay to close that upstairs window. Admitedly you will lose the "rugged" feel.

But what's more important? Your health... or keeping up the tough outdoorsy type image?

Interested to hear how it stacks up Mike.
Got a swag and find it a bit claustrophobic, so am considering a change.
Cheers,
Scotty
