Just driving home now and saw the price of diesel had just gone up from 127.9c to 131.9c / litre at the local servo. When's it gonna stop!!!

I know someone has probably answered this but can anyone tell me why diesel is 10c or more per litre than petrol? It seems to me it should be cheaper given refining etc.

I thought it was supply/demand. Theres a high demand for diesel worldwide, so the price is higher.

In big picture terms it is because the hugely expanding economies of China and India are placing such a high demand on world supplies. If anyone has ever travelled to these parts you would have noticed that diesels outweigh petrol vehicles by orders of 10 perhaps more. Also the ever growing factory sector in both countries are largely diesel/electric powered. Given the population size of 1.3billion (or thereabouts) in each of these countries - don't expect demand to lessen any time soon.

Because most if not nearly all trucks run on diesel, and alot of modern 4wd's (which purchasing of is on the rise) are diesel as well.

Thought it was bad at a $1.20. Glad I'm buyin' a petrol!

Filled up with ULP yesterday at 96.9 while the diesel guys were shelling out 116.9 or more. BP outlet down the road was trying to sell ULP at 118.9. Talk about wild variations. LPG was 40.7 from memory.

It's more expensive because they can.
Not as much competition; far lower sales via service stations than UPL.
Also, the big transport and mining companies screw the oil companies for price. So they recover through retail sales to smucks like us.
In lmost every other country, diesel is cheaper than UPL. Not Australia!!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't a diesel engine emit less CO2 as well?
If so, it should be cheaper for environmental reasons.

Diesel is subsidised in numerous European countries as its better for the environment etc.

Can you imagine trying to get that one past ACA or Twits Tonight?? They would have photos of every 1970s truck thats never had an injector clean on the screen....

Gotta admit that I've been thinking of buying a petrol/gas combo when I get my new truck next year - the only thing holding me back is the scarcity of gas outlets in the country and especially on the treks to Cape, Gulf, Kimberleys etc etc. Perhaps things might change now that petrol/diesel costs are soaring.

Large trucks get a rebate from the government, some farmers also get a smaller rebate. Funny thing though, the big rebate is slightly more than the difference in price from petrol. Remember a Pollie does not have to ever purchase fuel so it sure doesn't worry them.

There are so many resins why, Oil company’s play Duck’s and Profits, Singapore crude prices, little bit of screwing buy the gov, overseas demand ( Bloody China).

When will it stop NNNever, as long as there is a drop of oil left on this earth we will be shafted over the price.

What I find incredible is that some stations are selling ULP (as a example) for 1.05 well other’s are going for 1.12+ Per LTR, It’s the same product they get it from the same place BP Kwinana, and how is it that BP supply the fuel but it is always more expensive to buy at there stations.

It ain't going to stop and it seems we don't have much choice..! It is dissapointing when you consider what we pay for such a low grade fuel. Until we vote another government in that is prepared to change the tax and tarrif rates we have no alternative.

Is there a government alternative that we haven't heard of?

Because if you think Labor are going to reduce taxes you gotta be in Disneyland! You only have to look at what 'Honest (trust me I'm a politician) Steve' has done to Victoria!

It seems its fast coming to the stage where the average Joe who pays his own fuel bill wont be able to do a decent trip in this beautiful country. I guess its already happening to some degree. Even doing a few hundred k's on the weekend now can cost a hundred bucks in fuel on top of the other costs.. Michael

Was living in the UK a few years ago when most people were so fed up with high fuel prices (around a pound per litre) that picket lines were set-up at refineries. There were only 5 refineries in the UK and no tankers could leave to re-stock petrol stations. Within a week the country was grinding to a halt. Supermarkets had hardly any stock on their shelves, the retail company I worked for had a fleet of over 200 delivery trucks and all deliveries had to stop. It was quiet scary really as people thought that supermarkets were about to run out of food. It was amazing how easily a point could be made to the government and how easily what we take for granted could be taken away. In the end the government did not budge and the picket lines were abadoned. But amazingly after a month fuel prices quietly came down again to around 82 pence.

Wonder what would happen it our fuel deliveries were stopped as a protest against high taxation.

The Diesel prices in Aus are a rip off.

I an currently sitting in Taiwan , and have just come from Singapore, Bangkok, and HongKong.

When I Mention to the local's in these countries that Diesel costs more than petrol their expression is amazement, as diesel is at least 10% cheaper, just like it was in Oz 10-15 yrs ago.

we are been nosed (sucked in and spat out) by the fuel companies,.

That is why I am running BioBiesel , on principal, (not to mention cheaper and cleaner)

Norm C has the answer - because they can. With higher sales of ULP, we are subsiding the petrol - they cut prices to minimum profit on petrol where most people take notice, and hike up the price of diesel to compensate. We are being ripped off.

Just out of interest though, my mate and I went away camping on the weekend.

Two vehicles:

1 x Daihatsu Feroza 1.6L EFI Petrol
1 x Toyota Surf 3.0L EFI Diesel

Both cars loaded, the surf had a roof rack and 52L of water as well as all our gear.
The Feroza had lot's of firewood an esky and a swag.

Both cars have a 65L Tank.
Both cars were carrying a 20L Jerry Can.

Price of Diesel: $1.19 per/l
Price of BP Ultimate (all he runs, like a lot of petrol 4bie owners I imagine) $1.17 per/l

We follwed each other everywhere, where one car went, the other car went.
Including 70k's of city driving, about 100k's of highway driving (including big long hills). And lot's of forresty tracks and mud pits.

All throughout both days we were comparing (very un scientifically of course) our fuel guages and we were basically identical the entire trip on fuel usage!

Very interesting I reckon....

The missus and I were quietly happy, figured it's still worth owning the old oil burner and when Biodiesel takes off it'll be better for us, and the environment, so I'll be holding on to it.

Back in the old days I remember when five cents worth of mixed lollies got you a whole paper bag full. Try telling that to the kiddies nowadays! I sit here all day every day just mulling that over in my head, stopping regularly to dry the tears from my eyes with a tissue.

There are more important things in the World to worry about than the price of fuel!!!!!!!!!!!!

petrol\deisel is one of the cheapest liquids we can buy specially when you consider the refining process. A litre of bottled water is about $2, a stubbie of beer can be from $2 -$6 depending on where you are and they throw in the bottle free and don't forget spirits. Nobody buys 4wds for economical transport. Your choice, fill them with fuel then relax and enjoy them or worry yourself to death about how much it all costs. Cheers Rob
