Hi all,
I've just read in Western 4Wheeldriver Magazine that the new Hilux has 120kw of power at 3400rpm and 343Nm of torque at 1400-3200rpm.
This is in comparison to the Landcruiser 78 turbo diesel which has 122kw of power at 3400rpm and 380Nm of torque at 1400rpm.
These are fairly close statistics.
What does this mean?
Can the Hilux drag off the cruiser at the traffic lights?
Can the Hilux beat the cruiser up "Big red"?
Can the Hilux pull a larger, heavier vehicle out of the mud?
I have no idea the answers to these questions - is somebody able to enlighten me?
BTW - It doesn't matter anymore as I have just ordered a new RV Landcruiser Cab Chassis - Pick it up Monday week - Can't wait!!!
Cheers

IMHO...
> Can the Hilux drag off the cruiser at the traffic lights?
Yes.
> Can the Hilux beat the cruiser up "Big red"?
Yes
> Can the Hilux pull a larger, heavier vehicle out of the mud?
No
The cruiser will be heavier, so the hilux should have a better power to weight ratio. For snatching someone out of the mud, the cruiser will have better momentum, and should do it more easily.
Cheers, Paul ('03 hilux)

Yep Paul's talking sense.
The other thing you have to look at with these "specs" is where exactly these "maximum" Kw and Nm are in the rev range and how long they are current for. A Dyno Chart/Graph would be much more usable in a comparison.
No doubt the Hliux's common rail is a beast and will be very powerful, but you need to look at more than just maximum's to prove which is going to tow better or accelerate better IMHO.

Can a Hilux pull a bigger heavier vehicle out of the mud.
Damb right it can.
Today my mates 80 series was bogged to the axels, the 3l diesel Hilux snatched, dragged and pulled him through 20 m of mire. Second time this year.
Cheers

"Can a Hilux pull a bigger heavier vehicle out of the mud.

My mate with his Daihatsu Feroza 1.6L snatched a 60series out of a mud pit in
the pines the other night, that would have been a good photo opertunity. He was so bogged his crappy winch couldn't even get him out, but the frozie did it!! LMAO!
Shows how much energy is involved with snatching though, and why we should be careful!
