Just like to thank everyone that helped me with the earth problem I had with the GU patrol. It ended up being the earth strap as
well as an after market immobiliser someone had fitted and left wiring cut, and in a horrible mess. Luckily I have a friend who is an auto sparky (who was scratching his head for a while) and was able to cut the immobilser out leaving the original one in tact and still working. So a warning to all- Beware of dodgy wiring under the dash before you buy one.
