what's the latest with Marree Man?

I was curious about what the latest status of Marree Man is. There has not been much coverage on it in the press for a few years - and a search through Google only brings up old news.

Did they ever find out who was responsible?

Has it faded away by now?

Cheers

Jeff

I wouldn't think so. With all the attention it got as an aboriginal heritage issue - I think the act of ploughing it in would be considered as big an act of vandalism as the original act.

I sent one final shout after him to stick to the track, to which he replied “All right,” That was the last ever seen of Gibson - E Giles 23 April 1874

I heard that it was a "prank" by the US military personnel that worked at the Nurrangar spy base near Woomera, before they packed up, left and the base was closed.
It can be seen (faintly) in the Landsat7 mosaic image that comes with the 2005 premium edition of the 250K maps from NATMAP.

Hi Drogger

If your pc is under 2 yrs old and runs on xp you can d/load google earth and view it from there.
The Maree Man was/is very much still there when the satellite went over.
Google earth maybe no more than 12 mths old, going on recent housing developments in our area.

Hope this helps.

Do you have the Google Earth reference I can use to see this? (perhaps latitude/longitude references). I was trying to find the Maree Man today so searched the Exploroz forum in the hope of finding some sort of location reference to it and came across your post.

Thanks!

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks for the quick reply. I had a look, but am not sure if I can make it out (or even that I am looking up the reference correctly!). Thank you, though.

Cheers,
Mike.

You may be zoomed in too far - try zooming out a bit. He comes out a lot clearer in a wider field of view. (Remember he is 2 kms or so high)

Mike - just had a thought. Did you enter the co-ordinates in the search field exactly as I gave them?

-29.533, 137.467

They are decimal degrees - not degrees, minutes and seconds. If you try to enter them as 29 degree 53 minutes 3 seconds etc you won't get there.

Just enter the number exactly as I have them (including the negative sign).

But I suppose you know that already.

Actually, Jay Gee, I must confess that I am a new use to Google Earth and didn't realise you could enter co-ordinates in the search field. I was manually trying (using the Pointer co-ordinates) to navigate to the location you specified, without success. However, after reading your last post I typed in the co-ordinates exactly as you gave them and hey presto!

Thanks for your help.

Mike.

Hi Mike

I hope you found him with the others help?

If not, then close in on Lake Eyre and then go to the lower section of it (the smaller lake that is mostly white) it looks like it's by itself.
Now just under that you should see a crater type area.
Inside that crater area is the Maree Man.
Stay about 50miles above ground and zoom in when you have him.

"More mystery. A fax was received via a hotel in Oxford, England in January 1999 advising of a plaque buried near the noble warrior's nose. Sure 'nuff it was there when the cavalry went to investigate. What does it all mean?"

Still large as life 12 months ago, I even think it may have been touched up a bit as it is a big draw card for the scenic flight industry up there !

If you ask around regarding him in Marree, you will most likely draw a blank about who the creator is/was. But he is just north east of Hermit Hill. He can't be accessed from the Oodna Track.

I was camped recently in that region for 6 days; 4 blokes, two 4 x 4's, shade tent, all spread out - and my campsite area was mentioned as being about the same sze as Marree Man's knackers. We had called that spot Flat Tyre camp - I had two staked tyres in 100 metres - but we soon changed the name to Knacker Camp.

And yes, he's still there.

Anyway, didn't you know that he was created by national tourism/PR mobs, just prior to the Siderney Olympics? The idea was to draw attention to Oz. You'd have to say it worked!

Cheers
