Beware car covers can cause rust problems and friction burns on the paint work. Is there no other alternative but to use a car cover.

Can you put up some 90% shade cloth or similiar. Shade Cloth can be very easily stiched on a domestic sewing machine, just make sure you use synthetic 'cotton' to sew it.

thanks for the reply. The troopie is too big to fit in the garage and we live close to the beach. I'm concerned about the affects of salt and rust in the long term. Shade cloth would keep the sun off but wouldn't stop the salt air.

Damp and lack of breathing is the major cause of rust. Wrapping a vehicle up in a car cover would guarantee severe rust and corrosion. Using shade cloth and keeping the vehicle washed once a week would be far better to remove the salt. From memory the RACQ did an extenisve test on the best way to house stored vehicles, and they found a sheltered/shaded/enclosed area with the walls having ample breathing space around the bottom and top to let substantial air circulation.

Do a test. Throw a piece of black steel out in the weather raised off the ground by say a brick on each end, and another piece loosly wrapped in plastic on the grass. You will see within a few days which is the substantially better method.

And for how long do you want to cover up a Great 4WD?
