Hello All

My company has just provided me with a personal sized 406 EPIRB and it is interesting to compare it with the GME MT310 pocket model 121.5 EPIRB .The 406 beacon supplied is made by a USA company ACR , and is a model PLB-200 P/N; 2794.4 [ with internal GPS ] . Price about US$I,OOO . Weight 13 0z , same height and width as the MT310 but twice as thick . It would squeeze into some shirt pockets but would be a drag ; it's really designed to hang on a belt . All the features of a vehicle size EPIRB except transmit life is about 24 hours versus 48 hours . Quality is superb and it is used by USCG and military .But overall impression is it's too heavy , costs too much , and its special features help EPIRB administrators rather than speed up your rescue . At Aus$239 , and light , the MT310 will still provide good service until FEB 09 . Hopefully , future 406 units will be smaller , lighter and cheaper .

And they can pinpoint you down to an area within 5KM's. Just hope that you are not lost bushwalking in the bush or you will have to climb a tree to wave at the rescue plane. Take matches and get some smoke happening. In the desert away from vehicle you should have a mirror to "flash" at the plane.

Is there technology that will give rescuers better location???

The accuracy of the 121.5 system is 12nm , the 406 system is 2.3nm , or 406 with GPS 150metres . The search aircraft approaching the search area will home onto the EPIRB transmissions .If he has homing equipment he will track straight to overhead with an accuraccy of about 50metres . Without homing equipment he will track towards the stated position and using detuned signal strengths and 90/180 degree turning procedures will arrive overhead within about 100metres .The latter procedure could take about 15 minutes from the first pass abeam .The end result is a search aircraft directly overhead .Smoke or mirror flash is a terrific help to the homing aircraft .
