Bob Carr quits as Premier
By Staff reporters
July 27, 2005 - 11:31AM
Bob Carr will resign as NSW Premier and as the member for Maroubra next Wednesday after 10 years in the job.
Mr Carr made the announcement this morning at his office in Govenor Macquarie Tower in the city.
He said he and wife, Helena, had decided it was time to step down.
"Today, I announce my retirement as premier and member for Maroubra, effective next Wednesday,'' he told reporters.
Mr Carr said of his colleagues: "We've been a great team. We've
acheived a lot together''
He thanked the NSW public for their support during his time as Premier.
"You put your trust in me and my team over four elections.''
He said that he would lend his full support to his replacement, "whoever that leader is''.
It is believed Mr Carr decided to resign after reaching the milestone of a decade as Premier.
He is thought to be following in the footsteps of Neville Wran, who also spent 10 years in the top job.
It is understood Mr Carr has no other jobs lined up.
Police minister Carl Scully and Health minister Morris Iemma would be the most likely replacements as Premier.
Sources saying Mr Iemma could have the numbers to win a vote.

Thank God that fool Craig Knowles is no longer a contender. He was being groomed as the most likely successor but a series of stuff ups in Health and Planning ministries soon put paid to his prospects.
Scully has the media profile but Iemma at least looks like he is trying to do something with Health albeit from a pretty abysmal baseline.

I bet he won't loose any of his entitlements for failing to give adequate notice of resignation either!!! The costs associated with a sudden high power resignation like that would be astronomical!!
Bloody politicians - if you could put up with being hated by everyone it would be the ultimate job.

Being a Victorian, I don't know much about Carr, Ieena, but because I have been inovled in Road Transport for many years, having Mr. Scully in the top job (IMHO) would not be a good move at all.

Costa is a 4x4 advocate and camper, would be good on NP issues in our view, but I can't see him in the top job race. Who knows ?

Cocka/Chrispy,
Please don't wish Costa upon us. After his fine efforts with Police, Transport and now Roads ..... good grief! He is nothing more than a bovver boy like his unlamented ex-Federal colleague Latham.

Chrispy,
No problem. I'm like you. Scratching my head (no hair to get in the way) to come up with an alternative. They don't have much in the way of backup, do they?

well his golden handshake will not be as big as those bleeders that run the multinationals, like banks etc.
I hope we get a more moderate greenie that does not hate 4b's.

I read once that he has never had a licence or a car!! So he won't be
grey nomading - which is probably a good thing.
