I have a friend who is about to visit Fraser Island. He asked me about mobile phone coverage. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Phone coverage not good. The only place you can get some coverage is at Kingfisher Resort n the Western SIde of the Island -picks it up from
Hervey Bay.Have had both Optus and Telstra phones there at the same time and sometimes one works better than the other and other times the opposite carrier works better.
Hope your friends enjoy the Island.

We got a little coverage in the car kit around
Eurong on the beach, but the most of the rest of the east coast is hopeless, that was a Telstra GSM

Was there a few weeks ago.
Optus digital only near Kingfisher.
Telstra digital and cdma in a few areas on the east coast.
New tower operating near Orchid, another was being installed near
Eurong while we were there.
Best advice, leave the phone at
home and enjoy the island.

CDMA (Telstra) coverage on the east side was OK up to about
Eurong when I was there earlier this year. Nothing much north after that. No coverage in Dunbuburra.
GSM coverage (and CDMA) on the western side, which I think was over at
Hervey Bay.

hi pluto, as we dont know what provider your friend is on i can only talk on optus and cdma. optus has limited service on western side picking up from
hervey bay and below
eurong on eastern side. cdma on western side better but still intermitent. there are two cdma towers on eastern side, happy valley and
orchid beach a third is approved and ready to go at
eurong but they are still looking for a suitable location. there are public phones at all the epa
camp areas and shops. the cdma info is gospel.
regards peter

Peter, Your info is outdated. They are not looking for a suitable location at
Eurong. Tower is installed at the
Eurong Ranger station. I returned from the Island today, the base will be working in a couple of weeks, trust me I know. Other bases are at Happy Valley &
Orchid Beach.

Another spot that has good coverage is the
Telstra tower, near the airfield.
Its a bit of a climb up from the airfild side tho.
