Hi all, I have finally decided to buy a 99 gu patrol 4.2 turbo diesel, now just looking for some tips/advice. The vehicle has 124000k in almost perfect condition inside and out and seems to be very well looked after, but the service history is a bit sketchy, the log books have only 3-4 entries, it is a country car(other side of ipswch Qld). Was that a good year for this model?, and is there anything I should know. First time diesel owner also. I am getting RACQ to do their full inspection so this will tell me more.
Thanks in advance
Tony.

G'day Tony,
The main thing to check up with that model (right through to 2001 model in fact) is whether 5th gear has been fixed. Nissan made bit of blue in the early GU boxes (dunno why, cos it's same heavy clunker that was in the unbreakable GQ)......the spline that went through the 5th gear cog was too short and after a period of time, 5th would let go. I had mine replaced under warranty at around 83,000klm.
It is possible that the very early GU's may not have had the problem; I have a mate with a 99 model and he hasn't had a problem.
Other than that, there were stories of the rear spring support bracket not being up to the task......the bracket weld/s would break and the body would be sitting on the bracket from what I can gather. I have not had any first hand knowledge of this with either mine, nor anybody else I know with a GU, so I don't think it can be a widespread issue.
This is my 2nd diesel 4x4 (1st one was a 1993 GQ RX) and I cannot ever imagine going to a petrol powered 4x4.....the diesel is just too tractible to consider petrol again....but that is just my opinion.
Good luck, I'm sure you won't be sorry mate

Tony,

I've recently sold a 98 GU (4.2 Diesel) 224,000 k like Roachie says the spline on the 5th gear shaft was a bit dodgy in one of the earlier models but I'm not 100% sure wich year it effected, I've herd some say only the 2000-2002 model.

I never had a problem with mine and mine did a heap of towing, occasionaly in 5th when conditions permitted.

Give Nissan a call and give them your cars details (eng/serial no's etc) and they should tell you.

Cheers..............Browny

Tony,
I got a 1999 TD42 which I bought new, 210000kms so far and not a single problem.
For the 5th gear problem you can quote the VIN to Nissan and they will tell you if it was affected as they know which models they fitted the faulty gearboxes to.
Mine was cleared in writting by Nissan.

Tony,
My GU was a Dec99 build, and 5th went at about 115k. So the dodgy gearbox does exist in 99 builds.
