The large door check link anchors to a bracket that appears to be spot welded inside the "D" pillar
Any suggestions on a fix when the spot welds have failed and the bracket is loose?

This happenned on my GU also. I gather it is quite common due to the weight of the door because of the spare and caused by "throwing" the door open too hard all the time. I now try to be gentle with the doors when openning them.

I had mine fixed by my crash repairer who rewelded it then repainted etc. Wasn't too expensive.

I have the problem too, makes a god-awful noise when opening and closing the door. Great for the neighbours when i am leaving for nightshift :)

Apart from the noise is there anything that will deteriorate if i don't fix it?

Yeah happend to me as well. Took it to a smash repairer and $300 later it was repaired - strengthened, welded and painded. That was 4 years ago and has since survived two trips to Cape York and still going strong.

Sounda all to common, as mine did the same.

Removed the whole bracket and drilled a two holes one top and bottom. used two small bolts with lock nuts and bolted the inside bracket back on, re-assembled and it works fine, and has done for the past 12 months.

Cost 80c.

Pull out the plastic cover that hides the jack, reach in towards the tail light and you will feel the inner bracket abd where the spot welds have broken off.

Pull out the pin that holds the outer arm to this bracket and remove the inner bit.

Grind off the bit of metal skin that was spot welded. Drill holes in the panel from the outside, replace inner bracket and mark holes, remove and drill holes.

Now this is where you get to use the new MIG. Weld bolts in place, re-insert inner bracket with welded bolts through holes, ues a washer and lock nuts to tighten up.

line up outer bracket and insert pin, job finished.

Park up new MIG or look for more welding jobs.

Stuffed if I could get my hand in there.

After I took the deck off my _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx and opened the jack compartment, I found the opening but couldn't get my little fat body in the right position to touch the bracket, let alone grab it.

So I drilled through and put a cupla hefty self-tappers in from the outside. Seems to have done the trick, I guess time will tell.

Thanks for this thread, Fred.

I wouldn't have known how it all went together without it. The MIG will have to fight another day :(

Its a bit of a tight squeeze alright, but you have only to get a couple of fingers on it to stop it dropping down into the dark depths.

Self tappers are ok for a while, just keep them tight with a screw driver every now and again, but they will work loose eventually.
