Hoping other owners of diesel 4bys with internal timing chains {not belts}may be
able to help. I've been told the timing chain should be good for 250000 or more thats what they are designed for.I know if it lets go there's going to be some nasty damage.Engine is a 2.8 triton diesel.Could anyone with the same or similar setup shed some light on this?Owners manual only refers to timing belts in a broad fashion with no mention of chains.There is no indication of chain noise/slack at the moment but I was hoping to get a solid answer from some that have been there done that.Most mechanics say don't bother but I have had to do the chains on petrol motors before due to excess stretch.Can't get a workshop manual from Mitsubishi ,which costs more than the chain kit anyway! Engine has 106000k on it.
Any thoughts ?

As a registered workshop I can tell you we very rarely get a failed chain.
We do get rattly chains due to stretch when the oil pressure fed tensioner is at its limit. This is when to change the chain, guides and tensioner.
They do have a very long life though and yes in excess of 250 000 km.
I have a customer with an EB six cylinder falcon with 575 000 km and the chain has never been changed and is still quiet.
The only failed ones I have seen is a 3.0 diesel Patrol and EA Falcons.
They usually fail because the owner refuses to take note of the warning signs being excessive rattling on start up and noise at idle.
Just my opinion.

I will second that, don’t worry about it they are designed to last and if it need’s attention you will hear it rattle at stat up or at point’s in the rev range and even then it may still keep going for a long time.
Belts need changing at regular intervals as they are a rubber compound and there really is know
warning sign that they are going bad they will just break.
Basically if a chain need’s attention before 300,000k’s engineering/ Research and development were not doing their job.

Thanks 120cruiser and Exploder.That was what I suspected and was hoping to hear.Considering everything including the towball has to be removed just to get to it, I hope Inever hear it.
