Hi Folks,

Have just goten back from a great weekend surf fishing in Northern NSW and yes we did even manage to get a bit of fishing in and we actually cuaght a few as well.

My mate who was camped next to us in his tent uses a 20 litre plastic drum to store his drinking water at his campsite. The drum was brand new for this trip and it also had a brand new tap attached and prior to using it for drinking he gave it a good rinse out.

Anyway after the initial fill we had a coffee with him on Friday night and it tasted great. The next morning he filled his kettle again with water from this container and it tasted a bit strange. He then made me one and it had a strange plastic type taste to it. The milk we used was OK and wasn't off so we are guessing it was soemthing to do with his water storage.

Anyone got any bright ideas on what it might be.

G'day Brian, good to hear you got a few fish.

only thing i can think of was to check if the storage drum was meant to be used for storing of food etc, ie food grade plastic or if your mate sourced the drum from somewhere else... A friend of mine used to work in a plastics factory and apparently plastics that are not food grade are often stabilised or set? using lead and food grade stabilised with something else.
May explain the taste after a day or so.

reason he told me this is that i used to store teabags and coffee in my camping gear in black screw top containers i sourced from an employer and he saw these and told me about the lead. he wasn't too worried tho as he still drank his tea. needless to say they are no longer in my kit.
Cheers barry.

Didn't fill it from a el-cheapo garden hose did he??. Some of these can give the water a "plasticy" taste.

The problem is the container it is tainting the water for whatever reason, i have had a few ecperiances with this problem including bought water. if the container is meant for the storage of water take it back to the shop and get a new one or your money back.

I'va had a variety of plastic bins for water over the years - all sold as containers for water specifically - none have ever produced the odd taste - it might well be that the one you speak of was not designed for water.

Thanks for all the rplies. I will give him a call tonight and give him some tips. I think the container is probably not specially designed for water by the sound of things.

If it is food grade plastic and still has that funny taste try soaking it overnight with bicarbonate of soda (carb soda).

Makes a difference
