I AM THINKING OF BUYING A NISSAN X-TRAIL AND HAVE HEARD SOME CONCERNS ABOUT THE TRANSMISION OIL OVER HEATING AND THE 4X4 SYSTEM NOT WORKING AS IT SHOULD.HAS ANY ONE HAD THIS PROBLEM?
I HAVE ALSO HEARD THAT THEY ARE HEAVY ON FUEL DESPITE THE CLAIMS OF THE MANUFACTURER AND VARIOUS TESTS I HAVE READ.
ANY INFO FROM ANYONE WITH SOME EXPERIENCE WITH X-TRAILS WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED.

Transmission oil heating is new to me. Mind you ours is a manual.

And whoever told you they're heavy on fuel is living on another planet.

THANKS FOR THAT JAY GEE.
I AM ONLY CONSIDERING A MANUAL. HAVE YOU USED YOUR CAR IN SAND AS IT MAY SEEM THAT THIS IS ONLY A PROBLEM WITH AUTO MATICS UNDER THESE CONDITIONS(I NOTICED IN THE SPECS THAT ONLY THE AUTO HAS AN OIL WARNING LIGHT ). THE SOURCE OF THE FUEL CONSUMPTION FIGURES HAS BEEN KNOWN TO BE WRONG BEFOR.

Have used it on flat beach sand. Not tried hill work.

Remember that they are only "soft roaders", but I reckon they are better than the other "soft roaders".

Hi there jeremy ed our friends have an ex trail in auto went to stockton beach last year we had to tow himoff the beach as the transmission kept over heating with a light coming on inside warning him but the main problem was that it reverts back to 2 wheel drive untill it cools down then lets it go back 2 4wd again but this was happening all the time and was taking about 15 mins each time for the tranny to cool down in between He took it back to nissan and was a case of thats the design of the vehicle. Had a tranny cooler put on it just took an extra 5 mins for it to heat up before the light would come on again. This problem was only happening in the sand not normal city driving He has now sold it and bought a rav 4 and doesn't have any trouble also auto. Take Care Stephen m

Sounds like a text-book example of high tyre pressure. Engine is getting gunned (as its not going fwds) but all energy is going to diffs and warping out. Drop pressures, learn mistake and try again.

Jeremy

If you want a four wheel drive then buy a four wheel drive. The Xtrail is NOT a four wheel drive.

The Nissan Xtrail is a nice little car but basically a VERY Soft Roader with ALL Wheel Drive capabilty. Ours does a great job and it is very economical on the black top or gravel roads. We regularly get 10l/100km cruising at the speed limit. Having Cruise Control is an advantage. We have not had any transmission problems but then again the little car is not taken in to offroad situations.

If you are looking for a smaller 4x4 vehicle then I would suggest that a Hyundai or a Suzuki may fit your bill.

Hi Jeremy,

I used to own an X-Trail. I sold it in December and bought a Patrol. It is a great car, but it is not a serious 4wd. The 4wd system is only designed to operate at low speeds. This means if you drive in 4wd 'Lock' or 'Auto' on really soft sand at over 30km/h then the system will overheat and turn off putting you back in 2wd mode. I've only experienced it on one beach run, but each time it happened I had to wait about 5mins before I could engage 4wd again and get moving. You shouldn't have too many problems in other 4wd soft roader situations.

Fuel consuption was usually around 10l/100km's.

Thanks,

Aaron.

Jeremy, I can only recommend that you decide exactly what you want from the car. The occasional easy fire trail, shallow creek crossings, and a few plays in the sand - the Xtrail will be fine. However, once you start doing these things you might find that you want to drive in more areas inaccessible to the Xtrail, in which case you should look at at 4x4 with more ground clearance and low range.

A lot of the beach problems above seem to be high pressure in the tyres. Drop the pressure and the Xtrail is not too bad on the beach, I went on an organised tour at Stockton Beach and did all the dunes and hills the Prados and Patrols did without difficulty, but of course this will depend on the conditions of the day.

The Xtrail forum suggested above is a good place for info.

Rav4 eats the thing in sand.

Read what the Courier Mail writes about the Rav in sand

I drove an X-Trial in Finke Gorge Np. Low clearance was a problem.
Another problem was when I got bogged really deep. Showel work took me 6 hours because "recovery points" dont look trustful. OK car for gravel and small corrugations.

Hey Jeremy
I have done some hard stuff in my exy and she copes very well. Some goods tyres (simex centripedes) give you 220 mm clearance, a tow bar (recovery point) and run it in auto and you will be suprised at what she can do. If you play in sand run it in lock. I also have a GQ (best of both worlds) and the exy has done well - suprised many at the club with their Patrol and Cruisers.
As in terms of fuel 10L to 100km is the go.
There is nothing like a suprised look on the face of a Patrol or Cruiser owner out in the bush. Especially when they have spent all week rubishing them!
Australian 4wd Monthly will tell you they are the most capable soft roader off road.

Good Luck

They have no low range. In soft sand they are going to struggle . Autos do overheat if your really worried buy a manual. They would be find on frasier island.Don't tow caravans or heavy loads in the wet. Good on fuel we have two of them. To handle soft sand maybe the rav 4 would be bette, but the Xtrail is huge inside
