Hi to all,
Has anybody added rear globes to the existing unused tail lights on a late model (2003) Nissan Patrol ?
I want to do the following:
1) Add extra reversing globe on drivers side.
2) Add extra
orange flasher globes to top sections of lights.
3) Add extra tail/brake globes to the bottom red section.
What wattage globes are used in all above, the same as per book or halve the wattage to give total wattage as per book ?
Is the wiring already in the loom or do I add more wiring ?
Any Info you may have would be handy. Thank You.

Plenty of people have wasted the money... It also makes your car not meet ADRs.
but go for it
OffroadShop are now stocking Series I,II,III and the All New Series IV Taillights. Convert your dummy lights to full working lights. Please note some wiring is required which is a simple job for any handy man or your local Auto Electrician. Available from $425 from www.offroadshop.com.au

ADR's are Australian Design Rules.
They are not wired up initially because you have to be able to view the tail lights etc from certan angles and with the rear mounted spare it is partially blocked.
I can't see any problems in NSW for Pink Slip inspections but RTA or DMT in other states go under different rules.
They work under ADR's when we pink slip inspectors operate under Vehicle Safety Check rules.
Cheers

PandJ,
Just go to google and do a search on ' goodo4x4' and the guy who set up this website has a section on wiring up GU dummy taillights. Its a step-by-step guide and tells you what parts you need to buy, wiring diagrams etc. He reckons about $20 in parts. Ive got the globeholders from narva and am going to do it real soon so I'll let you know how i went.
Every GU owner should do this i reckon.
Good luck
Woody

its a pretty cheap and easy job to do. Save your $400 odd dollars for something else.
Anyway here't the direct link to my Tail Light mod page:

I had
mine done by auto electrican for about $200
He just wired from bumper lights up to main lights, and used
orange globe in indicator position.
It works really
well, and would recommend to all to do. When we put the brakes on, every one behind us knows we a applying the brakes.
Also good when towing a trailer, as body lights can be seen over trailer

Did
mine not long after I purchased the Patrol..cost me about $ 25. Purchased some rubber blub holders from a auto electrics
shop, same wattage bulbs as the ones in the bumper and some wire connectors.Used a soldering iron to cut the correct size holes in the dummies and held them inplace with selastic..been there now for 3 years and no problems.
Note...if you use a drill to cut the holes out you end up with tiny bits of plastic inside the lights which can be a bugger to get out.( as i found out doing the first one ).
Cannot see why it would be a problem with the ADR's truckster as you are still useing the original ones in the bumper....now i have extra reversing lights and two extra stop lights.
I think the Auto electricans are ripping you off if they charge you $200 to this as it only took me 30 to 40 mins to do and $ 25 in parts .

Like Govo,
I can't see why there would be a complaint if you leave the original lights working, I have ordered a set of Arab Spec from Steve Roly. I broke one of the original dummy lights at
Cameron Corner when i forgot i had the camper on the back and reversed.....i know "diiickhead" :(
Anyway it gave me an excuse to replace them....
The next part that confuses me is WHY manufacture dummy lights at all???
It has still cost the company to buy them and install them, surely a few bulbs and mounts wouldn't alter the cost of the vehicle that much.

Simple my dear
Watson.
They arent going to rebuild the body of the truck for our market, other markets run the lights there, and since they dont meet ADR's with them in place, just run blanks.
Sorta like having tackle after a vacetomy - it dont work, why have it?

We added lights to the rear of our GQ, the two light units cost $60 and about an hours work to hook 'em up..... my mechanic sourced the light unit, I forget which brand but they were easy to find as I recall. Genuine Nissan originals, the reflector ones that don't have lights.... $180 each!

I think most of us would agree that the ADR is ridiculous. If 3 lights are safer, why not 4 ? Sure there might have been a visibility issue with the spare wheel but this would have been better fixed by adding the bumper lights as extras - not making them the sole (too low) lights. The dummy lights are a poor second especially at night. When upgrading my early GQ to a later model the above suggestions will come in handy . You could always just remove the globes for a Roadworthy.
You would be stiff to get pulled over and fined because you wished to have safer lighting
Rules gone mad.

ADR
The lights on the bumper are because of the spare wheel.
Having extra lights in the original position would not breach the ADR. Having them there instead of the bumper would.
Why Nissan do not put extra lights there in the first place I do not know. May be penny pinching.

I am not certain on the ADR, but on the GQ patrol they use the bumper lights, however on the rebadged Mavrick there are no bumper lights. So if the ADR calls for lights in the bumper, how is it that the Mav is ADR approved with no bumper lights??

The ADR says lights must be visible from 45 degree angle.
The questions in life.
Why can toyota sell a NEW car with window tint that lets in less light than the ADR's state - eg, you cant go to Tint Factory and legally get the same darkness tint as they can sell on a new car.
