Hello to all,
Since I am now a bit futher with my travel planning early September to the Kimberleys (thanks to you for all your good recommendations) one more question: Apart from the tourist
routes in Purnunulu NP are there any specific walking
trails which are an absolutely must for experienced walkers? May I
camp anywhere or are there any restricitions?
Thanks for your answer - I'll share my experiences when coming back ....
Yours, Renate

Hi Doris.
I was there a month or so ago and there is a very long trail you can take if you're really into long hikes. That takes anything up to 4 - 5 days if that's what you're after.
Into the other attractions are not so long, hour or so max. into Little Palms I think it was called, was the longest.
For
camping the best sites are (I've forgotten the name!!) a right turn as you leave the
visitors centre.
Big sites with shared drop
toilets with
water for washing etc. but not for drinking. Also a shared BBQ area not far from the sites.
There one spot called the "quiet" campimg area and another for those with gen. sets.
Road is rough going in and will take a couple of hours.
It's worth seeing.
Have a good trip.

We were there in June - two
camping areas only - we turned South after leaving the
Ranger Station to the Walrdi
Camp as described above - if you turn North the
camp is
Kurrajong
We walked to Cathedra Gorge on the day we arrived - next day we drove North and walked
Echidna Chasm and Mini Palms.
Last day we walked towards
Cathedral Gorge then along
Piccaninny Creek [upstream] and back - walked as far as we wanted
This is the way to the extended walk - too hot when we were there for long walking
53 km from main road to
Ranger Station took us 2 hours

Do Cathederal Gorge in the morning before any of the tourists get there. When the early morning light is low the colours are best and you can get good photos without lots of other people getting in the way. If
the pool still has
water in it then walk as far around as you can go and look straight down into the
water and get the reflected high up cliffs in your low down photos.
Echidna Chasm is prob best at midday when the sun is directly overhead for the best light.
